Lida Cardozo Kindersley

The Alphabeticians - documentary screening and discussion on heritage crafts

Tue 17 March

Cripps Court

The Alphabeticians is a cinematic observational documentary following a pivotal phase in the history of the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop - a Cambridge institution and a renowned centre of lettercutting in stone.

Having inherited the workshop from her husband and former teacher, David Kindersley MBE, Lida Cardozo Kindersley poured her soul into her work for nearly half a century.

Unwell and on the cusp of her seventieth birthday, she prepares for the next step; to hand the workshop on her son and daughter-in-law. This time of change offers a portal to deeper themes relevant to all of us: what significance does the handmade have today? And what is the legacy we are passing to future generations?

Sifting symbolism and memory, the film shares a lasting reminder of the power of relationships and the resilience of creative spirit.

After screening at BAFTA-qualifying festivals, this will be the first homecoming screening in Cambridge.

The short film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring:

Dr Lida Cardozo Kindersley and Roxanne Kindersley - lettercutters and partners of the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop (featured in James Fox’s recent book Craftland)

Ross Harrison - documentary director, alum Emmanuel College

Prof. Marcus Waithe - Deputy Head (Research) of the School of Arts and Humanities, and co-author of Words Made Stone: The Craft and Philosophy of Letter Cutting

Hosted by Patricia Lovett MBE - celebrated scribe, calligrapher and illuminator, chair of heritage crafts association 2017 - 2022.
