Courtship and Engagement in Victorian England

Tue 11 February 2020

Ross Street Community Centre

Mill Road History Society presents a talk from Maggie Kalenak about love, courtship and engagement in nineteenth century England. She'll tell us stories of romantic successes and failures from her collection of love letters and diaries as well as how the highly ritualised and high-stake process was detailed in the etiquette manuals, magazines and novels of the period.

Maggie is a 3rd year PhD student in History at Girton College, University of Cambridge. She received an MA in Museum Studies from Newcastle University and a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her current research focuses on romantic and nuptial culture in 19th century England.

Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome, admission £3 on the door. Tea and biscuits available.

Cost: £3
