Fri 16 February 2024
Girton College
'Europe and America Engaging with Transatlantic Enslavement: Memories, Legacies and Restorative Justice'
This year we welcome Professor Olivette Otele a world-renowned historian, author of African Europeans: An Untold History (2020) and was the first Black woman to be appointed to a professorial chair in History in the UK. Olivette is currently the Distinguished Research Professor of the Legacies and Memory of Slavery within the Faculty of Law at SOAS, University of London. Her lecture is entitled Europe and America Engaging with Transatlantic Enslavement: Memories, Legacies and Restorative Justice.
The Founders' Memorial Lecture, established in 1928, celebrates the values that underpinned the Foundation of Girton College: equality and inclusion, excellence in diversity, radical thinking and an ethic of care.
The Founders' Memorial Lecture is the major public lecture in the College Calendar. This event is free to attend but booking is required via the booking form. Those wishing to attend should book by no later than 2pm on Wednesday 14 February 2024. Should we reach capacity, we will run a waitlist.
