Join the Cambridge University Symphony Chorus and East Anglia Chamber Orchestra for a performance of Haydn’s monumental oratorio, The Creation, performed in the stunning Gothic setting of King’s College Chapel alongside CUSC Musical Director, Richard Wilberforce.

Haydn was likely inspired to write a large oratorio during visits to England in the late 18th century, where he heard performances of Handel’s oratorios, including Israel in Egypt.

The work is scored for three vocal soloists, four-part chorus and a large Classical orchestra. It seems clear that, at least for the standard of the day, Haydn was striving for a big sound. Between the private premieres given to nobles and the first public performance in 1799, Haydn added a number of extra instrumental parts.

The first public performance was given at Vienna’s old Burgtheater on 19 March 1799. The work became an instant success, being performed almost 40 times in Vienna during Haydn’s lifetime. There were also over 40 further performances around Europe and in the United States before the composer died in 1809.

For this performance, we are thrilled to be joined by a line-up of stellar soloists, each with vast experience singing as lead roles in major international opera houses and concert stages.

This performance will be sung in German.

Cost: £38, £35, £25, £6 Students: £34, £31, £21; or £5 on the door (subject to availability)
