Refugees in Museums

Thu 17 June 2021

As part of Refugee Week, please join The Fitzwilliam Museum for this special online panel talk, centred around the theme of migration and the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. This virtual event follows a special display by contemporary artist Issam Kourbaj, titled: 'Don’t Wash Your Hands: neither light agrees to enter the eyes nor air the lungs', currently on view in the A. G. Leventis Gallery of Ancient Cyprus, Fitzwilliam Museum (display open till September 6, 2021).

The panel talk aims to highlight the resonance the crisis had to contemporary Art and Poetry, and more generally the role of Museums in responding to social phenomena such as this. Panellists include, the artist Issam Kourbaj, celebrated poet Ruth Padel, a representative of the Cambridge refugee support groups (CamCRAG/ CRRC), Catharine Walston, and Fitzwilliam Museum curators & Learning and engagement specialists, Anastasia Christophilopoulou, Richard Kelleher and Miranda Stearn.
