CBC on Virtual Tour: Changing the story of ovarian cancer

Fri 1 July 2022

Each year about 7,500 women in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and around 5,000 will have the most aggressive form of the disease. Only 43% of women in England survive five years beyond their ovarian cancer diagnosis, compared with over 80% for more common cancers such as breast (85%) and prostate (87%). This is because the disease is often diagnosed late, treatment options are limited, and many women develop resistance to current therapies.
In this CBC on Virtual Tour webinar join Professors James Brenton and Paul Pharoah, leaders of the Ovarian Cancer Programme at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre, to hear about pioneering research in Cambridge that’s aiming to improve outcomes for ovarian cancer patients. Find out about the symptoms, treatments, clinical trials and latest innovations in ovarian cancer.
Professor James Brenton is a Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, Professor of Ovarian Cancer Medicine in the University of Cambridge Department of Oncology, and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at Addenbrooke's Hospital. His research focuses on understanding the extreme genetic complexity of high-grade serous ovarian cancer to help explain why ovarian cancer is so difficult to treat and to identify the best treatment options for each patient. His lab spans improving our understanding of the biology of ovarian cancer, discovering better tests for blood and tissue samples, and translating these findings into new trials in the clinic.
Professor Paul Pharoah is Director of Teaching for the University of Cambridge Department of Public Health and Primary Care and Professor of Cancer Epidemiology in the Department of Oncology. His research focuses on inherited genetic variations that increase risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. His team is investigating how inherited genetic variations affect the way cancer patients respond to different treatments to help develop more personalised therapies for patients.
This event is part of the ‘CBC on Virtual Tour’ series – the chance to learn more about the Cambridge Biomedical Campus where over 20,000 people at the forefront of the changing face of healthcare are working.
This event will be recorded and a link will be sent to all participants afterwards. It will also be posted on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus YouTube channel.
