Made in Ancient Egypt

From elaborately decorated coffins to the Books of the Dead, ancient Egyptians produced objects which remain iconic today. But who were the makers behind them and how were they made?

Exhibition launch event: A Walk through College; a Journey Through Time — Art, Architecture and Design at Churchill College, Cambridge, 1958-2024

Thu 30 January

Bill Brown Creative Workshops

Step into the Bill Brown Creative Workshops for an exhibition exploring Churchill College’s history of art, architecture, and design. Churchill was the first college in Cambridge to be built in the modernist style, signalling the scientific, forward-looking philosophy underlying its foundation, and this exhibition presents a unique opportunity to trace the continued resonance of its unique architectural vision through the decades.

Drawing from the vast collections of the Churchill Archives Centre, the exhibition features architectural plans, drawings, and documents — many of which will be shown to the public for the first time — which cover not just the original college buildings by Richard Sheppard, Robson and Partners, but also the many other projects, built and unbuilt, which surround them on the College grounds. The exhibition connects architecture with the College’s collection of modern art, featuring pieces by Robyn Denny, Denis Mitchell, Patrick Caulfield, and Louise Nevelson, along with furniture that complements the architectural style. Together, they highlight the interaction between light, space, and landscape within the College.

Accompanying the exhibition is a digital showcase on the Churchill Archives Centre website and an art catalogue that delve deeper into this remarkable collection.

This exhibition has been made possible through the support of the Churchill College Summer Opportunities Fund, Churchill College Undergraduate Opportunities Fund, the Bill Brown Creative Workshops Fund, the Churchill Archives Centre, and the Møller Institute.

Cost: free of charge
