Cambridge University Schola Cantorum: Compline at Clare

Cambridge Schola sings a service of Choral Compline in Clare College Chapel

Emmanuel Bach and Jenny Stern

Sat 21 February

Clare Hall Dining Hall

This concert gives us the occasion to hear infrequently performed music. The Fantasies by CPE Bach and Schubert are forward-looking works, exploring moods and atmospheres that both announce and fulfil the expectations of the romantic movement. André Prévin is best known as a conductor, but he was also a pianist of note, and an interesting composer. His Violin Sonatas were no doubt influenced by the fact that he married Anne-Sophie Mutter, one of the best violinist of her time. Korngold was one of the most notorious child prodigies of his day, whose music, written in his early teens, was taken up by such people as Mahler and Artur Schnabel. His suite for piano and violin is extracted from incidental music composed in 1919 by an already seasoned 22 years old composer, and first performed in the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

Programme:
C.P.E. Bach Fantasie
Schubert Fantasie
Previn 1st Violin Sonata
Korngold Suite from Much Ado About Nothing

Cost: £5-20
