Chemical elements and plant growth: A journey through the periodic table
Please note: this event has been CANCELLED
Fri 3 July 2020
Botanic Garden
Plant growth uses a wide range of chemical elements from across the periodic table. The breadth of the periodic table will be explored during this half-day course. From carbon fixation in photosynthesis, hydrogen and oxygen uptake through water imbibition, to the utilisation of a range of metal elements essential to the proper functioning of enzymes required for plant growth and reproduction. How plants have evolved to survive in metal rich or nutrient poor soils will also be covered.
Along the way, the history of micronutrient and macronutrient research especially that undertaken in the UK, will be woven in looking at the science and the scientists who worked on these topics.
No prior knowledge of chemistry is needed just an interest in plants and finding out more.
Cost: £35
