Uncovering the Tree of Life of Palms
Thu 8 May
Sainsbury Laboratory
We are delighted to welcome Professor William Baker from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for a special keynote talk. Prof. Baker leads the PAFTOL (Plant and Fungal Tree of Life) project and recently co-authored ground-breaking research published in Nature.
In this talk, he will explore the evolutionary history of palms, offering new insights into one of the world’s most iconic plant families and celebrate the phylogenomic revolution with examples from global research.
? Hear how a decade-long global effort is close to completing the Tree of Life for all 13,600 flowering plant genera - and how a near-complete tree for 2,500 palm species has been built.
? Discover how new DNA technologies are reshaping taxonomy, island biogeography and our understanding of plant evolution -and what exciting questions come next.
