Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Divinity. Professor George Brooke, of the University of Manchester, will give the annual Tyrwhitt Lecture, entitled The apocalyptic community, the matrix of the teacher, and rewriting scripture, at an open meeting of the Old Testament Seminar, on Wednesday, 4 March, at 2.30 p.m. in the Runcie Room, Faculty of Divinity, West Road.

Criminology. Dr Katrin Mueller-Johnson, Lecturer in Applied Criminology at the Institute of Criminology, will give a public seminar entitled Improving older adults' eyewitness testimony, at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, 26 February, in Seminar Room B3 at the Institute of Criminology, Sidgwick Avenue.

Gender Studies. Multi-disciplinary Seminar Series. Dr Mary Laven, of the Faculty of History, will give a seminar entitled Jesuits and eunuchs: re-encountering gender in late Ming China, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, 26 February, in Room 101, Sir William Hardy Building, Downing Site.

MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (currently the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit - until 31 March 2009). The eleventh annual Sir William Dunn Lecture, entitled The machines that divide and fuse mitochondria, will be given by Professor Jodi Nunnari, of the University of California, at 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 7 April, in the Max Perutz Lecture Theatre, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Hills Road. Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. Professor Michael Mitzenmacher, of Harvard University, will give the Eighty-Seventh Kuwait Foundation Lecture, entitled Bloom filters, related data structures, and their applications, at 5 p.m. on Monday, 23 February, in the Wolfson Room, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road (entrance on Clarkson Road before the Isaac Newton Institute).

Slavonic Studies. The seventh annual Stasiuk Lecture in Contemporary Ukrainian Studies will be held on Friday, 27 February, at 5 p.m. in the Umney Theatre, Robinson College. The lecture will explore the internal dynamics and the international implications of recent events in Ukraine and will be given by Dr Olena Prystayko, Research Fellow at the EU-Russia Centre, Brussels, and Associate Professor at the National Academy of Public Administration, Kyiv, and a leading specialist on relations between the EU, Ukraine, and Russia. The lecture is entitled The Ukraine-EU-Russia triangle: is there room for a workable relationship? The lecture is organized by the Cambridge Committee for Russian and East European Studies (CamCREES) and Cambridge Ukrainian Studies with the support of the Cambridge University Ukrainian Society. It is generously supported by the Stasiuk Programme for Contemporary Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta.

Sociology. Sociology seminars will take place on Fridays, from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m., in the Seminar Room, Faculty of Politics, Psychology, Sociology, and International Studies, Free School Lane.
