Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 21 February 2009

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on Saturday, 21 February 2009:

1. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Divinity honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon His Highness Prince KARIM AL-HUSSAYNI, K.B.E., The Aga Khan.1

2. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon MELINDA FRENCH GATES, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Philanthropist.1

3. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon WILLIAM HENRY GATES III, Hon. K.B.E., Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Microsoft Corporation, Philanthropist.1

4. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon The Right Honourable SHIRLEY VIVIEN TERESA BRITTAIN, Baroness WILLIAMS OF CROSBY, P.C., Honorary Fellow of Newnham College, Co-founder and sometime President of the Social Democratic Party, Public Service Professor of Elective Politics Emerita in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.1

5. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon ELIZABETH HELEN BLACKBURN, Ph.D., F.R.S., of Darwin College, Morris Herzstein Professor of Biology and Physiology in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, Biologist and Bioethicist.1

6. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon WALLACE SMITH BROECKER, Foreign Member of the Royal Society, Newberry Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, Geoscientist.1

7. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon Sir PETER ROBERT CRANE, F.R.S., John and Marion Sullivan University Professor in the Department of Geophysical Sciences, University of Chicago, sometime Director of The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.1

8. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon AMARTYA KUMAR SEN, Hon. C.H., M.A., Ph.D., F.B.A., Fellow and sometime Master of Trinity College, Honorary Fellow of Darwin College and St Edmund's College, Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University, Nobel Laureate in Economics.1

9. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon WANG GUNGWU, C.B.E., Chairman of The East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, sometime Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Professor of Far Eastern History Emeritus at the Australian National University, Canberra, Historian of China and the Chinese.1

10. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon Sir PETER MAXWELL DAVIES, C.B.E., composer and conductor, Master of The Queen's Music.1

11. That the title of the Degree of Master of Arts honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon ALLAN GREVILLE BRIGHAM, Local Historian and Guide, Chairman of the Friends of the Cambridge Folk Museum.2

12. That the title of the Degree of Master of Arts honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon Brigadier Sir MILES GARTH HUNT-DAVIS, K.C.V.O., C.B.E., Private Secretary to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T., Chancellor of the University.2
