REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS

Examination in History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science, Technology, and Medicine for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 502)

With effect from 1 October 2009

The scheme of the examination has been amended to replace the three long essays currently required to be chosen from specified areas by two long essays, comprising a critical literature review and a research paper, and two shorter essays.

History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science, Technology, and Medicine

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science, Technology, and Medicine for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
 (a) a thesis, of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes but excluding appendices and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Department of History and Philosophy of Science;
and
 (b) two essays, each of not more than 2,500 words, including footnotes but excluding bibliography, each on subjects chosen by the candidate from a list of subjects announced by the Degree Committee;
and
 (c) two essays, each of not more than 5,000 words, including footnotes but excluding bibliography, each on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

2. The examination shall include an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls; save that the Examiners may, at their discretion, waive the requirement for an oral examination.
