Faculty of History: The Balzan-Skinner Lecture in Modern Intellectual History since c. 1500

The Faculty of History wishes to invite proposals for the first Balzan-Skinner Lecture to be delivered in the field of modern intellectual history since c. 1500. The Lecture, which is scheduled to be held with an accompanying one-day Colloquium in April 2010, will be associated with the Faculty of History, The Historical Journal, and the University's Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CRASSH). Applicants must be a post-holder (irrespective of the source of funding) in an institution of higher education or research, and must also be at an early stage of their career (normally no further than ten years beyond the award of the Ph.D. Degree).

The University will make available a sum of up to £18,000 to reimburse the successful applicant's existing employer for the cost of releasing the Balzan-Skinner scholar from their normal duties to complete a new piece of research on which the Balzan-Skinner Lecture will be based. The Balzan-Skinner Lecture will be published, subject to the standard refereeing process, in a suitably extended and annotated form in The Historical Journal.

Further particulars outlining the various components of the required application documentation may be obtained from the Secretary of the Selection Committee, Faculty of History, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9EF (tel. 01223 335350, email jen26@cam.ac.uk) to whom applications should be sent by 16 May 2008.
