Pembroke College

DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Pembroke College is seeking to appoint a Deputy Director of International Programmes. The College has, over the last 30 years, developed a network of contacts with overseas universities particularly in Japan and the United States which brings some 800 students each year to Cambridge for periods of up to six months. Virtually all the students take specifically designed courses for credit which can be transferred back to their home universities. Courses are designed and administered by the Department of International Programmes (DIP) and are taught by staff most of whom are recruited from within the College and the University. The DIP is also responsible for the students' welfare and for arranging social, cultural, and sporting programmes for its students.

The DIP has a permanent staff of four who assist the Director and up to 100 temporary staff who help deliver the courses. The Deputy Director will be responsible for maintaining and developing strong and productive relationships with partner universities overseas through visits and regular consultation. He/she will also be responsible for assisting overseas partners with the marketing of Pembroke's programmes and for the development of new markets for existing or new Pembroke-based programmes in China, India, Malaysia, and Europe.

The Deputy Director will take responsibility for a portfolio of courses, and be responsible for the forward planning of programmes; for the direction of programmes and for the preparation of reports, transcripts, evaluations, and accounts with regard to each programme. Forward planning includes: dealing with applications and student enquiries; close liaison with partner universities and College departments; timetabling; resourcing; staffing; organization of field trips including accommodation, recruitment, and training of course directors. Direction of programmes will be either personal or via course directors; it includes day-to-day responsibility for the efficient and successful conduct of the course particularly via liaison with and support for teachers, teaching assistants, and administrative assistants; hosting of social events; and liaison with any accompanying staff and relevant departments at Pembroke and in other Colleges.

The Deputy Director will also act as secretary to the College's International Programmes Committee and deputize for the Director in his absence. The Deputy Director will play a key role in strategic planning towards further refinement of existing programmes and the development of new initiatives in the field of international education.

The post is full-time and the successful candidate will be likely to have a higher, probably doctoral, degree, experience of educational management and of university-level teaching. A proven ability to work independently and effectively sometimes under considerable pressure would be an advantage.

The salary offered will be within the range £34,500 to £40,000. Benefits include final salary pension and bonus scheme after a qualifying period, discounted private healthcare, and use of a gym on site.
