AHRC Ph.D. Studentship: Early Modern Cosmology/Astronomy (1450-1650): Notice

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science has obtained funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a Ph.D. Studentship on a topic in the area of early modern cosmology/astronomy (1450-1650). The award will be held in association with an AHRC funded five-year project grant on 'Diagrams, figures, and the transformation of astronomy, 1450-1650'. The Ph.D. will be supervised by Professor Nicholas Jardine, FBA.

The successful applicant will have standard tuition fees and approved Cambridge College fees paid and, where eligible, will receive a full AHRC maintenance grant. Candidates must meet the AHRC's academic criteria and due to funding regulations, must be either a UK national, or be a non-UK national who satisfies AHRC eligibility criteria. Candidates should have: a first class or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate discipline; a master's degree in an area relevant to the project, although applicants who do not hold a master's degree will be considered if they can demonstrate sustained and relevant experience and meet the criteria outlined in the AHRC guidelines; an interest in relevant areas such as production, typology or uses of early modern cosmological or astronomical images; proven English proficiency, if not a native speaker; and a measure of proficiency in Latin.

Applications should include: a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a sample of written work; an outline of 500 words, explaining why the applicant is interested in the project and how he or she might approach it; a transcript of his or her qualifications to date, and anticipated results if he or she is still studying; and two letters of reference to be included with the rest of the application, in sealed envelopes.
