University Equine Surgeon in the Department of Veterinary Medicine

The University Equine Surgeon position will be available from 1 June 2008. This is a senior clinical appointment, and the post-holder will have primary responsibility for the equine surgical caseload within the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital. After an initial settling in period he or she will take on the role of team leader in the equine clinic. He or she will, with the other equine clinicians, be responsible for the teaching of undergraduate students with a particular emphasis on either soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery, according to his or her clinical bias. The post-holder will provide clinical instruction, participate in the service work of the Hospital, and facilitate the research activities of the Department. The salary will be £51,095 a year.

Applicants should have a veterinary degree registrable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; and have completed a suitable surgical training or residency programme and hold an RCVS Diploma and/or European College Diploma in an Equine Surgical discipline. The successful candidate will have substantial practical experience in either equine soft tissue or equine orthopaedic surgery.

University Lecturer in Classics Education in the Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is seeking to make an appointment to the post of University Lecturer in Classics Education. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the P.G.C.E. initial teacher education and training programme in secondary Classics, and to make generic contributions to the secondary P.G.C.E. partnership course within this leading national and international centre for educational research, teacher development, and the study of education.

The Cambridge Schools Classics Project is located within the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty works closely with the Faculty of Classics within the University. It is committed to the highest standards of research and teaching and is a significant contributor to the improvement of educational policy and practice in partnership with schools and other educational agencies both in the UK and internationally.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will take up appointment on 1 September 2008.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

Computer Officer, Grade II (Computer Manager), in the Fitzwilliam Museum

The Fitzwilliam Museum has built a reputation for its application of ICT to a range of functions from Collections Information Management to Online Public Access to its collections catalogue, educational resources, and virtual exhibitions. It is involved in innovative projects funded by the Museums, Archives and Libraries Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

A vacancy has arisen in the key role of Computer Manager who supports these projects, manages the LAN, five servers, and over 100 connections, ensures the maintenance and upgrading of hardware and software, supports the users, and advises the Museum management on all IT and computing matters.

The Museum is seeking a highly motivated computer professional, with broad experience of management, strategic planning, some experience of fund-raising for digital services, up-to-date technical knowledge, and a sympathetic interest in the Museum's purposes. Excellent inter-personal and communication skills are pre-requisite as is a flexible approach towards a seven day week working environment. Applicants must be familiar with UK Museum Documentation Standards and be able to demonstrate a keen interest in the fast developing field of digital cultural asset management and exchange.

The appointment is being made in a period of organizational development and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the further development of electronic services and systems.

Essential qualifications are: a degree in computer science; evidence of installation experience and hardware maintenance; experience of managing major projects and of working in an academic environment with public access orientation. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year. An offer of employment would be dependent on a successful security check.

Research Associate in Early Modern Cosmology/Astronomy (1450-1650) in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science is seeking to appoint a two-year postdoctoral Research Associate for the AHRC-funded project, 'Diagrams, figures, and the transformation of astronomy, 1450-1650', awarded to Professor Nicholas Jardine, FBA, Dr Liba Taub, and Dr Sachiko Kusukawa. The successful candidate will work full-time on this project, including participating in project seminars and workshops, designing and setting up the project website, helping to organize workshops, and providing editorial assistance for publications. The successful candidate will be expected to produce at least one research paper a year on a topic relevant to the project, and will be mentored by one of the project investigators. The salary will be in the range of £25,134 to £32,796 a year.

Candidates should have: an excellent research record in early modern science; proficiency in English, if not a native speaker; proficiency in Latin and at least one other European language; completed their doctorate by the time of taking up the appointment.
