University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

University Lecturer in the Department of Genetics

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the Department of Genetics. Applications are encouraged from scientists who have demonstrated the potential to become leaders in their field of research. The Department particularly wishes to attract a candidate with an expertise in an area of quantitative, population, or evolutionary genetics; however, applications from candidates in all areas of its broad research base in Genetics will be considered. The Lecturer will be expected to interact with existing members of the Department in both research and teaching. In addition, the research environment of Cambridge offers many opportunities to establish collaborative links with members of other Departments and Faculties, including Medicine, Engineering, and Physics. The successful candidate will be expected to play a full role in the teaching and research activities of the Department, including both the training of postgraduate students and postdoctoral Fellows, and in undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Biology.

University Lecturer in Philosophy of Science in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science intends to appoint a University Lecturer in Philosophy of Science. Responsibilities include contributing to all aspects of undergraduate teaching and supervising graduate students in addition to taking a prominent part in leading research in the field in the Department and taking on administrative responsibilities.

Short-listed candidates will be informed in early March and will be invited to the Department to present seminar papers and for interview. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position on or before 1 October 2008.

Administrative Officer (Communications Officer, Education and Policy) in the Office of External Affairs and Communications

The University of Cambridge has a world-wide reputation for outstanding academic achievement. The holder of this high-profile role will be responsible for planning and implementing strategies for communication with the media and policy makers. The post-holder will plan visits for MPs and politicians, produce briefing papers, and take the lead on access, admissions, and all other education related issues. He or she will also be responsible for managing the work of the Access Communications Officer.

The successful candidate will have experience gained either in a media, media relations, or public affairs setting with a proven record of success. He or she will be results-oriented, have outstanding communication skills, and be politically astute. Experience of the higher education sector is desirable but not essential.

The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate's current salary.

Advisory Officer, Grade I (Energy Officer) in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) of the University Offices

The Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) seeks to appoint an Energy Officer in the Energy Team of its Maintenance Section. The Energy Team is dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of University buildings and so reducing the University's carbon footprint.

As a senior member of the team the post-holder will have access to a level of funding which reflects the commitment of the organization to carbon management. He or she will survey and design work to identify energy saving opportunities as well as manage projects to implement those measures. This means the post-holder will have the freedom to be creative and the opportunity to see his or her ideas through to fruition.

As the main link between EMBS and University Departments, the post-holder will also work with staff and students to reduce the contribution to climate change made by the University's teaching and research activity.

The successful applicant will have a sound technical background, with practical experience in the design or maintenance of building services and possess at least an HNC/HND or equivalent in a relevant discipline. He or she will either already be a Low Carbon Consultant or be prepared to work towards this status. The University is committed to developing the full potential of its staff so full support would be provided for the pursuit of both this and other appropriate qualifications.

Excellent communication skills would also be desirable in order to engage successfully with all stakeholders.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends is currently £30,012 to £40,335 a year with potential progression on contribution once in post to £44,074.

Communications Systems Manager in the University Computing Service

The University of Cambridge is undergoing significant technological change to introduce a modern world-class suite of voice communications systems and there is a need for a talented technical manager to take a primary role in the introduction and operation of these systems. These systems serve approximately 17,000 users across the University and its Colleges.

The successful applicant will be a good communicator, energetic, highly technical, and forward thinking. It is expected that the applicant will have some background in telecommunication systems and/or VoIP technology, and should have a strong background in the development and maintenance of various types of servers, e.g. Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows servers. The role-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of various communications systems, e.g. Cisco Call Manager, voicemail, and call logging systems and their associated integration, and should have experience of managing complex projects and team leadership. Three two-year teaching positions in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science is seeking to appoint to three two-year teaching positions in the following areas:

(1) History of Science, 1600 to 1850;

(2) Philosophy and/or Sociology of Science and Technology;

(3) History of Modern Medicine and Science.

The successful candidates will have submitted a Ph.D. before taking up their posts and will be expected to contribute fully to the lecturing, supervising, examination, and administration of courses for both undergraduate and graduate students in the Department. Short-listed candidates will be invited to the Department to present seminar papers and for interview. The positions will start on or before 1 October 2008, and will be supported by a nine-month probation period. The salary will be in the range of £25,134 to £32,796 a year.

Two posts in the Personnel Division (Academic Staff Development section) of the University Offices

Graduate Development Adviser (limit of tenure: 24 months)

The Graduate Development Programme (GDP) encompasses teaching, research, and transferable skills training for Cambridge's population of graduate students. Courses are tailored to commissioning departments, and the Programme's success means that the Academic Staff Development section now needs an additional team member with experience of development in a higher education setting to co-ordinate, design, and deliver courses and to co-ordinate a network of University Teaching Associate trainers.

Continuing Professional Development Adviser (limit of tenure: 18 months)

The Academic Staff Development section seeks a colleague to work independently and in collaboration with other team members to progress the development and implementation of a flexible framework for continuing professional development for academic staff, contract researchers, and graduate students with teaching responsibilities. The successful applicant will also develop a coaching and mentoring service to those engaging with the framework.

In addition to the skills and experience described above, the successful candidate will be aware of national CPD initiatives for academic staff and those who support student learning. He or she must be able to identify opportunities inherent in challenges; experience as a coach is desirable, as is knowledge, or the ability swiftly to acquire it, of the cultures and conventions of a collegiate university. Communications Services Co-ordinator in the Office of External Affairs and Communications

The Office of External Affairs and Communications seek an exceptional communications professional to provide cover for their outstanding Communications Services Co-ordinator.

The post-holder will be responsible for managing the use of the brand identity of the University, including the systems that are needed to underpin its delivery using an outsourced model of suppliers. This will include the management of supplier relationships, online templates and guidelines, and a photographic library. The role also demands exceptional writing skills for the production of high-profile University copy, including the Annual Report.

A proactive team member, the post-holder will work collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of External Affairs and Communications, as well as other Departments. He or she will need extensive experience of structuring, disseminating, and managing complex information for effective communications across a diverse organization. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as the post-holder will be required to provide guidance to senior staff across the University on issues such as identity guidelines, design, and print.

The salary will be in the range of £23,692 to £27,466 a year. The funds for this post are available until 20 April 2009 or the return of the post-holder, whichever is the earlier.
