Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos (Dutch and Portuguese)

With effect from 1 October 2008

New Papers 1, 2, and 4 in Dutch have been introduced as shown below; a new Paper Du. 3 was announced in July 2007, the numbering of this paper will become Du. 5, the current Paper Du. 4 will become Du. 3; the current Paper Du. 6 (which also serves as Paper 19 of the Linguistics Tripos) has been withdrawn.

SCHEDULE B

Dutch

The papers available in Dutch will be:
Du. 1 Introduction to Dutch texts
Du. 2 The medieval and sixteenth-century literature and history of the Low Countries, c. 1170 to c. 1585
Du. 3 The literature, history, and visual arts of the Netherlands, 1585 to 1700
Du. 4 The literature, history, and culture of Belgium and the Netherlands, from 1830 to the present day
Du. 5 Introduction to the language and literature of the Low Countries

SCHEDULE Ib

The entry for Dutch has been amended so as to read:
Dutch: Du. 2, 3, 4, 5*.

* This paper is not available to candidates who offer Dutch as a language in Part IA or a Certificate or Diploma in Dutch.

SCHEDULE II

The entry for Dutch has been amended so as to read:
Dutch:Du. 2, 3, 4

The regulations have also been amended in order to allow those students who chose to take the papers 'Introduction to the language and literature of the Low Countries' (which will become Paper Du. 5) or 'Introduction to the language and literature of Portugal, Brazil, and Portuguese-speaking Africa' (Paper Pg. 3) in the examination for Part IB of the Tripos alongside their two Part IB Tripos languages to proceed to take the Part II oral examination in either Dutch or Portuguese respectively. The amendment will first affect candidates who are taking Part II of the Tripos in 2010 and whose oral examinations for Part II will take place in September 2009. Regulations 24(a)(iv) and (b)(iii) have accordingly been amended so as to read:

Regulation 24(a).
(iv) oral examination C in a language in which the candidate offers one or both of Papers C1 and C2, provided that, if the candidate has obtained honours in Part IB of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, the language shall be a language offered by the candidate in Part IB. The Faculty Board have agreed that the following papers shall constitute a language for the purposes of this regulation: Du. 5 and Pg. 3.

Regulation 24(b).
(iii) oral examination C in a language in which the candidate offers one or both of Papers C1 and C2, provided that, if the candidate has obtained honours in Part IB of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, the language shall be a language offered by the candidate in Part IB. The Faculty Board have agreed that the following papers shall constitute a language for the purposes of the regulation: Du. 5 and Pg. 3.
