Oriental Studies Tripos and Preliminary Examination, 2008

The Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies give notice that, with effect from the examination to be held in 2008, the form of the examinations for the Oriental Studies Tripos and the Preliminary Examination in Oriental Studies will be changed as follows:

Aramaic

Am. 11. Aramaic specified and unspecified texts, 2

The course for this paper involves reading texts in a variety of Aramaic dialects.

The paper consists of seven seen texts for translation and comment and one unseen text for translation and comment. All questions should be attempted. All questions have equal value.

Assyriology

As. 15. Mesopotamian special subject

The course-work which constitutes this paper comprises EITHER four essays of a maximum of 4,000 words, (options 1-3) OR two text editions (option 4).

For options 1-3, the subject of each essay will be selected by the candidate from a list of topics provided. Two essays are to be submitted to the Faculty Office in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies by the first day of Full Lent Term, and two essays by the first day of Full Easter Term in the academical year of the examination.

For option 4 the candidate will select two Akkadian and/or Sumerian text(s) from a choice of four provided, and submit an edition of each, with sign-by-sign transliteration and normalized transcription, translation, and commentary on any textual problems and on the content, placing the text in its historical context and elucidating its purpose. The texts selected will be taken from published cuneiform copies, and will not normally have been the subject of a recent edition and commentary. The complete submission for each text should not exceed ten A4 pages. One text edition is to be submitted to the Faculty Office in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies by the first day of Full Lent Term, and the other text edition by the first day of Full Easter Term in the academical year of the examination.

Hebrew Studies

H. 14. Post-biblical Jewish texts

The course for this paper involves the reading of post-biblical Jewish texts.

This paper is divided into two sections, both of which should be answered: Section A will contain four passages for translation and comment from texts in post-biblical Hebrew, three of which will be seen texts and one an unseen text. All four passages should be attempted. Section B will contain four passages for translation and comment from texts in Judaeo-Arabic, three of which will be seen texts and one an unseen text. All four passages should be attempted. All questions have equal value.

Japanese Studies

J. 2. Modern Japanese texts, 1

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A (65 marks) candidates will be required to translate from Japanese into English passages taken from texts read in class during the Easter Term. Knowledge of Japanese grammar may also be tested in the form of questions attached to each passage. In Section B (35 marks) candidates will be required to translate one unseen passage from Japanese into English. Both sections must be attempted.

J. 3. Modern Japanese texts, 2

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A (50 marks) candidates will be required to answer questions that test their knowledge of Japanese grammar. In Section B (50 marks) candidates will be required to translate one unseen passage from Japanese into English. Both sections must be attempted.

Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Is. 3. Middle Eastern and Islamic literatures

The paper will consist of two sections. Section A consists of six passages (not for translation), of which candidates will be required to choose two for discussion and analysis. Section B consists of four essay questions, of which candidates will be required to attempt two. All questions carry equal marks.

Is. 8. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 1

This paper will consist of six essay questions of which candidates will be required to answer three. All questions will carry equal marks.

Is. 15. Arabic literature, 3

This paper will consist of two sections. Section A will consist of four passages (not for translation), of which candidates will be required to choose two for discussion and analysis. Section B will consist of four essay questions and candidates will be required to attempt two. All questions will carry equal marks.

Is. 22. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 6

The paper will consist of two sections each containing four essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer three questions with at least one from each section. All questions will carry equal marks.

Preliminary Examination in Oriental Studies, 2008

East Asian Studies

EASP. 1. Introduction to the history of East Asia

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A there will be ten questions on East Asian history; in Section B there will be five questions focusing on the history of China, Japan, or Korea. Candidates will be required to attempt two questions from Section A and one from Section B. All questions will be of equal value.
