Philosophical Society

On 12 November at 5.30 p.m. in the new venue of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Lecture Theatre, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Professor Kevin Brindle, of the Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Research UK, Cambridge Research Institute, will deliver a lecture, entitled Imaging biology in the cancer patient - new ways to guide treatment (towards the Star Trek Tri-corder). All who are interested are invited.

At a meeting held on 29 October in the Bristol-Myers Squibb Theatre, Professor H. Ahmed, Vice-President, was in the Chair. Professor Oliver Rackham, OBE, FBA, of the Department of Plant Sciences, delivered a lecture, entitled Threats to woodland: present and future. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor Alison Smith.

Thirty-four Research Studentships amounting to £28,500 have been awarded to Fellows of the Society.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on 22 October in the Arts School, Bene't Street, at 4.30 p.m.

Professor T. J. Pedley, President, was in the Chair.

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 2006, which were adopted.

2. The following Officers and Members of Council were elected for the year 2008:

President: Professor A. W. Cuthbert

Treasurer: Dr D. Husain

Vice-Presidents: Professor H. Ahmed, Professor T. J. Pedley, Professor A. G. Smith

3. Fifteen Fellows were elected and no Fellows were re-elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting four Fellows had died and one hundred and ninety-two had resigned.

4. Messrs Peters Elworthy & Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 2007.
