Gates Cambridge Trust: Treasurer

The Trustees of the Gates Cambridge Trust are seeking to appoint a Treasurer, in succession to the late Dr Stephen Fleet.

The Treasurer is responsible to the Trustees for oversight of the income and expenditure of the Trust and for recommending the operating budget in consultation with the Provost (Dr Gordon Johnson). The Treasurer is also responsible to the Trustees for the management of the finances and accounts of the Trust. The Trust's endowment is invested according to a policy determined by the Trustees on the advice of their Investment Committee. The investments are managed by fund managers advised by Cambridge Associates. The Treasurer is a member of the Investment Committee and is expected to keep both the investment policy and the managers' performance under review on behalf of the Trustees. The Trusts accounts are audited annually by Deloitte and Touche and are consolidated with those of the University for University purposes.

The Treasurer will be part-time, between 20 and 40% of full-time by agreement. The person appointed will be educated to first degree level; will have a background that includes financial management but direct experience of investment management, whilst an advantage, is not essential; will have good organizational and communication skills; will be effective in a small but committed team; will have sympathy for the values of higher education; and will be able to work effectively in the complex Cambridge context. The Gates Trust office is based in 3E Kings Parade, Cambridge, and the Gates Common Room for Scholars in the University Centre, Mill Lane, Cambridge. It is not expected that this position will require significant travel, either in the UK or internationally. The person appointed will be expected to work in the Trust office in Cambridge. Terms of appointment, including remuneration, will be settled with the person to whom the post is offered. The initial salary is expected to be in the range of £17,000 to £21,000 a year (Band 1 of the University professorial range, pro rata).

Applications should be made in writing (or by e-mail) to the Honorary Secretary of the Trustees (from whom further particulars may also be obtained), Dr Timothy Mead, Registrary, The Old Schools, Cambridge, CB2 1TN (e-mail registrary@admin.cam.ac.uk), by 20 December 2006 and should comprise a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact details of two referees.
