RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN ARTS, HUMANITIES, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Applications are invited for a Research Fellowship, to be held in any arts subject, for the academical year 2007-08 and tenable for three years. The College normally awards an Arts Fellowship each year. This is open to graduates of any university with no age limit, but is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to a candidate who has recently completed a Ph.D. or is close to completion. The competition involves assessment of candidates' submitted work and interview. Those interested should note that the standard needed to progress to the later stages of the competition is extremely high. Overseas candidates should also note that the College cannot be responsible for payment of air fares should they be short-listed for interview.

The emoluments of a Fellowship are reviewed annually. The present stipend is £14,922 a year for a Fellow who has not proceeded to the Ph.D. Degree, and £16,027 a year, rising by two annual increments to £18,255 a year, for a post-Ph.D. Fellow. Research expenses up to a total of £2,500 over the three years of the Fellowship may be paid.

MARGARET SMITH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Applications are invited for a Margaret Smith Research Fellowship, for the academical year 2007-08 and tenable for three years. The Margaret Smith Research Fellowship is offered for research to a graduate whose field of research lies in East and West Asian literature and religion, either in themselves or in a comparative context (Margaret Smith's own interests were in Persian poetry and mysticism). The emoluments and conditions are equivalent to the main competition.

Further particulars and application forms for both competitions are available from the Administrator to the Research Fellowship in Arts Committee, Girton College, Cambridge, CB3 0JG (e-mail jrfs@girton.cam.ac.uk), or may be downloaded from the Girton College website at http://www.girton.cam.ac.uk/. Please note that applications must be submitted by post only. The closing date for applications is 15 January 2007. Short-listed candidates will be invited to submit work at the end of January, and final interviews will take place on 20 March.
