W. H. D. ROUSE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Governing Body of Christ's College invites applications for the W. H. D. Rouse Research Fellowship, tenable for a period of four years. It is awarded for work in one of the following areas: Classics (including Comparative Philology) and Indian languages. Tenure may be split by a period, or periods, of intermission (unpaid) not exceeding two years in duration, to enable the holder to pursue research away from Cambridge. Applicants should hold a first degree, or higher degree, from a university in the British Isles, or should be studying at such a university for a higher degree. They should be well advanced with their postgraduate studies, and should not hold a Fellowship at another Cambridge College. As a guide, applicants should normally have completed, by 1 January 2007, not more than ten terms of full-time doctoral and post-doctoral research. It is intended to give the successful applicant the opportunity to participate in collegiate life, to the mutual benefit of the individual and the College, with the aim of enhancing the individual's prospects of appointment to an established academic position.

The normal initial stipend for a W. H. D. Rouse Research Fellow is currently £13,206 (without a Ph.D.) or £16,075 (with a Ph.D.), rising by three annual increments to £15,002 or £18,225 respectively. Fellows living out of College receive a supplement of £1,800 (without a Ph.D.) or £3,860 (with a Ph.D.). Stipends are reviewed to take account of general adjustments to University stipends. Financial support from other sources will be taken into account in setting the Fellow's stipend. A limited amount of teaching in College is permitted, for which payment will be made at the usual rates. Research Fellows are entitled to the use of a room free of charge and seven free meals a week. Research expenses may also be paid.

Application forms are available on the College website at http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/rouse/, and may also be requested by e-mail from the Master's Assistant (e-mail scn23@cam.ac.uk). Completed application forms, along with a statement of research and a curriculum vitae, should be sent to the Master's Assistant, Christ's College, Cambridge, CB2 3BU, so as to reach her not later than 5 p.m. on 15 January 2007. Candidates should also arrange for two people familiar with their work to send references to the Master's Assistant by the same date. Late applications cannot be accepted. Applicants are advised to check with their referees before the closing date that their references have been sent. Short-listed candidates will be invited by letter/e-mail to submit by 5 p.m. on 12 February 2007 four copies of any published or unpublished work with which they wish to support their application, of a total length between 20,000 and 40,000 words. Selected candidates will be invited for interview in the second half of April 2007.
