University College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in the field of Ethics, tenable for three years from 1 October 2007. Applications from those working in ethics as applied to law, medicine, biotechnology, or the environment are particularly encouraged and may be preferred over others. Junior Research Fellowships are intended to provide opportunities for outstanding academics at the beginning of their careers.
The primary criterion for appointment will be research excellence. Candidates must have a strong educational record; be approaching the end of their doctoral research or have begun post-doctoral study; have research expertise as demonstrated by publications, or demonstrate promise of such achievement; and have a coherent plan of research for the duration of the Fellowship.
The successful candidate will have opportunities to work in collaboration with members of OxCEPL (the Oxford Centre for Ethics and the Philosophy of Law) (http://www.univ.ox.ac.uk/cepl/), and ETHOX (the Oxford Institute for Ethics and Communication in Health Care Practice) (http://www.ethox.org.uk/).
The current stipend for a Junior Research Fellow is £16,729 (under review). The stipend will normally be paid at a reduced rate if the successful candidate is in receipt of other funding. The Fellow will be offered free meals and single accommodation in College if available, or a housing allowance in lieu (currently £4,375 a year). There will be an academic allowance (currently £1,463), an entertainment allowance (currently up to £612), membership of USS, and private health insurance. The post-holder will be expected to offer a limited amount of undergraduate teaching for the College if invited to do so.
Selected candidates may be asked to submit a piece of written work, such as offprints of one or two published articles or a chapter of their theses. Applicants should indicate on their application forms which material they propose to submit, if invited to do so, but should not at this stage submit any written work.
