POSTS IN THE HUMANITIES DIVISIONAL OFFICES

The University is strengthening the Humanities Divisional administration through the creation of a number of new posts. These are available from 1 November 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. Letters of application, together with a detailed curriculum vitae should reach Mrs M. Parsons, Humanities Divisional Offices, 34 St Giles', Oxford, OX1 3LH, by no later than midday on 16 October 2006. Applicants should indicate clearly for which post or posts they are applying. Further details of the posts may also be obtained from this address or on the University's website at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/.

Divisional Graduate Studies Officer (Assistant Registrar)

The University is looking for someone with a high intellectual ability and considerable administrative experience in higher education to join the senior administrative team in the Humanities, with primary responsibility for graduate studies. This is a challenging job requiring knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues and strategic planning, together with experience of committee work and a high standard of both written and oral communication. The post-holder will work closely with the Head and Secretary of the Division, and with Directors of Graduate Studies in the constituent Faculties. The post-holder would have oversight of the work of relevant clerical staff in the Faculties, with a view to the eventual creation of a Divisional Graduate Studies Office. The salary will be in the range of £36,536 to £42,367 a year (grade 9).

Executive Assistant to the Head of Division and the Secretary of Division

This exciting new post has been created to provide executive support to the Head and the Secretary of the Humanities Division. The post-holder will undertake work which has previously been done by the Head or Secretary of Division personally, and will work extremely closely with them. The duties will be very varied, and a highly flexible and broad-ranging approach is required. The work will fall largely into two areas: projects, and individual cases. Most of the project work will inform strategic thinking, whilst individual queries will often raise questions of division-wide policy. The successful candidate will enjoy ferreting out and applying information across a wide range of topics. Attention to detail, numeracy, excellent command of English, a polished writing style, a sound appreciation of financial and quasi-legal matters, tact, and discretion are essential. Educated to degree level or equivalent, applicants will have sufficient background in Higher Education administration to hit the ground running, combined with endless enthusiasm for learning new areas. Previous experience of Oxford is not essential, but could be an advantage. The post could suit an administrator early in their career looking for the opportunity to engage with senior administration preparatory to moving into either more strategic/policy arenas or more senior departmental administration. The salary will be in the range of £32,471 to £38,772 a year (grade 8).

Divisional Research Co-ordinator and Divisional Research Facilitators

Three new posts are available to develop the research portfolio of the Humanities at Oxford. These comprise one Divisional Research Co-ordinator and two Divisional Research Facilitators. Each post-holder will work closely with a small group of Faculties in the Division. The Research Co-ordinator will in addition oversee the work of the Research Facilitators, reporting to the Divisional Secretary, and working closely with the Head of Division and Divisional Secretary in developing research policy and activity. Working closely with individual academics, the post-holders will both publicize funding opportunities and aid the application process. The primary objective is that within three years, the culture of grant application will have become more embedded, and research units and individual academics supported so that they can perform at their highest level within an improved research infrastructure. The increased activity will enhance the international profile for research within the Division, as well as substantially increasing research income. The Research Co-ordinator will additionally work on the financial aspects of research, and will play a pro-active role in fostering relations with the major funding agencies. Applicants should be of high intellectual quality with a background in research normally in the Humanities, probably to doctoral level; the Research Co-ordinator should also have experience of managing staff. All three posts are funded for a fixed term of three years, but it is likely that the post of Research Co-ordinator will be further extended. The salary for the Research Co-ordinator will be in the range of £32,471 to £38,772 a year (grade 8), and, for the Research Facilitators, £25,633 to £31,525 a year (grade 7).
