University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £32,471 to £41,133 a year.

University Lectureship in Engineering Statistics

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Engineering Statistics in the Department of Engineering. The successful candidate will take up the appointment as soon as possible but no later than March 2007. Candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research with a background in Engineering and Mathematics and a strong interest in modern statistical methodology. The particular areas in which the Department wishes to enhance its activities in statistical methodology include but are not limited to environmental engineering and the monitoring of sensors, random vibrations, extreme value applications, bio-sensors, bio-informatics, communications, image processing, and radar tracking .

This post is part of a new University initiative in statistics. The post-holder will have a key role in this initiative and will be expected to collaborate closely with members of the Department of Engineering and the University Statistical Laboratory and more widely across the University.

The successful candidate will have or be expected to develop a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation and top-rank research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, supervising final-year projects, and supervising graduate students.

Two University Lectureships in Law (specializing in international law)

The Faculty of Law is seeking appropriately qualified individuals for appointment to two University Lectureships in Law from 1 September 2007. In both posts, preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research interests lie in international law. Those appointed will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, conduct and supervise research, and participate in the general work of the Faculty. University Lectureship in Modern Japanese Studies

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in Modern Japanese Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to take up appointment on 1 January 2007 or as soon after that date as possible. Applicants should have a good publication record and experience in teaching about modern Japan at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Native or near-native fluency in English will be assumed and the ability to read and speak Japanese with ease is an absolute prerequisite. The field of expertise is not restricted but applicants with an additional discipline such as sociology or social anthropology would be particularly welcome.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer from 1 August 2007 is £33,779 to £42,791 a year. University Lectureship in Systems in the Computer Laboratory

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the Computer Laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment by 1 January 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have an outstanding record of research in an area that overlaps or complements the interests of current members of the Department. The Department is looking for an individual whose vision of the subject's future will have international impact. Particular preference may be given to candidates whose interests are in the area of Systems Research.

Systems Research in the Computer Laboratory embraces hardware, networks, operating systems, and distributed applications. It covers problems of scale from the very small (operating systems for sensor nodes) up to the very large (network architectures), and from the slow (latency caused by speed of light) to the fast (interaction of electronics and photonics). It also incorporates broader themes such as the challenges posed by sustainability of the planet. The Laboratory provides an environment in which engagement between theoretical and practical aspects of Computer Science, and with industry, is encouraged.

The person appointed will be expected to teach subjects central to Computer Science, including digital circuits, operating systems, and digital communications, in addition to their own specialities. An interest in the interplay between teaching, long-term research, and deployment of new technologies is especially welcome.

The appointment will be made at the University Lecturer level for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory performance.

Director of PET (Radiochemistry) Scientific Services in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Faculty of Clinical Medicine

Director of Finance and Administration at the Institute of Continuing Education

Applications are invited for the post of Director of Finance and Administration at the Institute of Continuing Education. The Director of Finance and Administration is a member of the Senior Management Team of the Institute and plays a key role in the work of the Institute by overseeing all matters of financial management and accounting, together with central administrative services, and by contributing to the strategic development of the Institute's work. It is expected that the successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with a good university degree, will have experience of working within an educational or academic environment, and will have proven managerial and communication skills. Energy, flexibility, and the ability to think strategically are essential qualities. The salary for this position is currently £45,417 a year (under review).

Computing and IT Manager (Senior Computer Officer) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

A vacancy exists in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) for a Computing and IT Manager, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post-holder will have the lead role in the provision of computing and IT facilities in DAMTP.

DAMTP is one of the world's outstanding mathematics departments. The work of its 140 members of staff and 300 postgraduate students is aided by a heterogeneous network of approximately 450 computers comprising of an extensive Unix network, a Windows network, a number of Macintoshes (some integrated into the Unix network), plus an increasing number of laptops (running various operating systems). The effective provision of these facilities is important for the continuing success of the Department.

The Department is seeking a motivated computer professional with both technical and managerial skills to lead a team of five computer officers. The post-holder will have overall responsibility for the management of computer staff, and for the acquisition, efficient running, general support and development, and forward planning of computing and IT facilities for research, teaching, and administration in DAMTP. In addition he or she will be responsible for user support, for the Faculty of Mathematics' teaching network, and will be expected to liaise with departmental staff responsible for specialist equipment (including the 'Cosmos' supercomputer), and with other computing staff in the wider University.

Candidates should hold a degree in a computing/scientific/engineering subject, have substantial theoretical and practical knowledge of UNIX, Windows, and networking, have a familiarity with Apple Macintoshes and other computing technology, have a record of managing computer staff (and getting the best out of them), and possess the ability to communicate with academic and administrative staff at all levels of computer literacy.

This is a permanent appointment at grade 10, subject to a nine-month satisfactory probation period, on a basic salary scale of £43,638 to £46,295, and discretionary points extending to £50,588 (pay award pending), with initial salary depending on experience.
