Eliot Slater Prize in Psychiatry: Notice

The Professor of Psychiatry gives notice that the Eliot Slater Prize will be awarded in 2007for the best essay entitled 'In 2007 the new Mental Capacity Act will come into force. This Act provides the basis for substitute decision-making when a person lacks the capacity to make decisions for him/herself. The Act requires that the decisions must be in that person's 'best interest'. Discuss how these concepts of 'capacity' and 'best interests' are applicable in the day-to-day lives of people with learning difficulties and the relevance to medical praactice.'

The essay, which should not exceed 6,000 words, should be submitted by 8 June 2007 to the Departmental Secretary, Department of Psychiatry, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hills Road. Selected candidates may be given a viva voce examination.

The Prize is open to clinical students who are to sit for Part I of the Final M.B. Examination in June 2007.

The value of the Prize in 2007 will be about £300.
