FIXED-TERM POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN THE HISTORY AND POLITICS OF AFRICA

The Department of Politics and International Relations seeks a Research Fellow to join the interdisciplinary Oxford Research Network on Government in Africa, which is also associated with the Department of International Development and the Faculty of History. The Network co-ordinates and facilitates research on the politics and history of government in Africa, south of the Sahara, in the colonial and post-colonial periods. The post-holder will carry out comparative research in the study of Democracy, Identity, and Citizenship in Africa, contribute to and support the Network's activities, and undertake some teaching. The post is available for two years from 1 October 2006 or an agreed date as soon as possible thereafter; it is strictly fixed-term and non-renewable due to fixed-term funding.

Applicants should have a completed doctorate in, or evidence of imminent completion, as well as a research agenda associated with, a substantive area of politics, history, or development studies. Applicants should have a publication record that is, or will be, sufficient for inclusion in the Department's Research Assessment Exercise submission in 2008. The post-holder will also need excellent IT, interpersonal, and communication skills and the ability to teach at undergraduate and/or graduate levels. The salary is on the scale £20,044 to £30,002 a year, subject to review from 1 August 2006 as part of the implementation of the National Framework Agreement for staff in higher education.

FACULTY BOARD SECRETARY AND ADMINISTRATOR IN THE MODERN LANGUAGES FACULTY

The University of Oxford seeks someone with high intellectual ability and administrative experience in higher education or a similar field to join the administrative team in the Humanities, with primary responsibility for the large and complex Modern Languages Faculty. This is a challenging job requiring excellent skills in personnel, buildings, and financial management as well as in committee servicing and both written and oral communication. The post-holder will be working largely independently, and will need to relate well to staff at all levels. In addition to heading the Modern Languages administration, the post-holder will be expected to advise the Chairman of the Faculty Board on a wide variety of academic policy matters.

The post is graded at Academic-Related Administrative Grade 3, and the salary will be in the range of £31,525 to £37,643 (with discretionary points to £41,133), subject to review from 1 August 2006 as part of the National Framework Agreement for staff in higher education.

TWO RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS FOR AHRC-FUNDED PROJECT ON ROMANCE HISTORICAL MORPHOLOGY

The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages seeks to recruit two Research Assistants to work on a new four-year AHRC-funded project entitled Autonomous Morphology in Diachrony: comparative evidence from the Romance languages. These fixed-term posts are available from 1 October 2006 for four years (the starting date may be negotiable).

The Research Assistants will help gather and evaluate the project's corpus of Romance inflectional data. They will help oversee presentation of the database on the project's website and they will familiarize themselves with developments in morphological theory and Romance linguistics. They will help co-ordinate arrangements for international workshops connected to the project. They will also be required to participate regularly in various classes and meetings in connection with the project, and may be asked to participate in fieldwork visits abroad.

Candidates should have a good knowledge of more than one Romance language. It is intended to appoint one Research Assistant with particular knowledge of 'western' Romance varieties (Ibero-Romance, Gallo-Romance, Raeto-Romance) and another with particular knowledge of 'eastern' Romance varieties (Italo-Romance, Romanian, etc.). The successful candidates should possess a higher degree (normally Ph.D.), and research experience in linguistics. Knowledge of morphological theory and/or dialectology will be an advantage, although specific training will be provided. The candidates should have good IT skills. The salary will be in the range of £20,044 to £30,002 (Academic-Related Research-Staff Grade 1A), subject to review from 1 August 2006 as part of the implementation of the National Framework Agreement for staff in higher education.

TWO POSTGRADUATE STUDENTSHIPS IN ROMANCE LINGUISTICS

The University of Oxford is recruiting candidates for two AHRC-funded doctoral (D.Phil.) Studentships, to be awarded as part of a major research project Autonomous Morphology in Diachrony: comparative evidence from the Romance languages. Professor Martin Maiden will be the principal supervisor of projects on 'The historical morphology of selected Ibero-Romance dialects' and 'The historical morphology of selected Gallo-Romance dialects'.

A good first degree in a relevant area of linguistics and an excellent knowledge of at least one of Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Occitan, or French will be required. Consideration may be given to candidates whose main expertise lies in other Romance languages. A formal postgraduate qualification in a relevant area must be completed by the time the Studentship commences. Candidates who do not have such a qualification must show evidence of sustained experience beyond first degree level that is specifically relevant to the doctoral research project.

The Studentships will commence from 1 October 2006 and will be for three years. UK residents will be awarded maintenance fees at the normal AHRC rate as well as tuition fees. Nationals of a member state of the EU other than UK who do not meet UK residence requirements are eligible for a fees-only award.
