REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS: NOTICES BY THE GENERAL BOARD

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 335)

The regulations have been amended as set out below (i) to enable students who have passed an Honours Examination other than Part IA of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos to proceed to Part IB of the Tripos; (ii) to ensure that students who take the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos normally undertake a year abroad as part of their course; and (iii) to enable the Faculty Board to publish texts and topics for the Part II examination in the academical year before the examination. The Schedules to the regulations have also been amended following a reorganization of the papers available in Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish.

With effect from 1 October 2006

Regulation 3.

By amending this regulation so as to read:

3. The following may present themselves as candidates for honours in Part IB:

(a)a student who has obtained honours in Part IA of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, in the year after so obtaining honours;
(b)a student who has obtained honours in another Honours Examination, in the year after so obtaining honours, provided that he or she has kept four terms and that nine complete terms have not passed after his or her first term of residence, and subject to the prior approval of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages.

Regulation 4.

By deleting sub-paragraph 4(b)(i) and removing the numbering of the subsequent sub-paragraph, by relettering paragraph 4(c) as 4(d), and by inserting a new paragraph 4(c) so as to read:

(c)A student who has obtained honours in Part IB of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos may, in exceptional circumstances, be a candidate for Part II in the year after so obtaining honours, by seeking special permission to do so from the Faculty Board by the division of the Lent Term preceding the year in which he or she wishes to take Part II. Such a candidate shall offer the papers currently listed in Regulation 24(b).

Regulation 17.

By amending Regulation 17(b) so as to read:

(b)for the written examinations for Part II: before the division of the Easter Term of the year next preceding the examination concerned;

Regulations 24 and 25.

By replacing in the first line of Regulation 24(b) the reference to Regulation 4(b)(i) by reference to Regulation 4(c); in the first line of Regulation 24(c) the reference to Regulation 4(b)(ii) by reference to Regulation 4(b); and in the first line of Regulation 25 the reference to Regulations 4(a) or 4(b)(i) by reference to Regulations 4(a) or 4(c).

SCHEDULE A

Dutch

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that Paper Du. 6 (The history, varieties, and structure of the Dutch language) will be reinstated with effect from 1 October 2006.

Italian

The titles of Papers It. 1, It. 3, and It. 4 have been amended as follows:

Paper It. 1from 'Approaches to Italian literature' to 'Italian texts and contexts'.
Paper It. 3from 'Italian texts and contexts' to 'Italian modernism'.
Paper It. 4from 'Critical readings in Italian literature' to 'Autobiography and self-representation in Italian culture'.

Spanish

Paper Sp. 8 (Cervantes) has been replaced by a new Paper 8 entitled 'Spanish cinema and television'.

SCHEDULE Ib

Italian

Paper 6 has been deleted from this Schedule.

SCHEDULE II

Italian

Paper 5 has been deleted from this Schedule.

SCHEDULE B

French

Paper Fr. 12 (A special subject in French culture) has been retitled as 'A special subject in French culture: early modern thought'.
