University Lectureship in the Institute for Manufacturing (Department of Engineering)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Industrial Systems, with effect from 1 September 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Institute for Manufacturing forms part of the Division of Manufacturing and Management. It enjoys excellent academic and industrial links within the 5* Department of Engineering, both nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will lead research in the design and organization of industrial systems coupled with teaching for the course in Industrial Systems, Manufacturing, and Management for the M.Phil. Degree, which requires close engagement with a wide range of companies nationally and internationally. The appointment provides a unique opportunity to pursue research in close collaboration with industry and the involvement of high-quality graduate students. Successful candidates are likely to have a good academic background, knowledge of the design, implementation, and operation of modern manufacturing and supply systems, and demonstrated capability for original research. Candidates with research interests in the fields of supply chain information management, enterprise requirement planning (ERP) systems, product life cycle information management, manufacturing automation/information architectures, industrial internet deployment, and simulation techniques will be particularly welcome.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £25,565 to £39,452 a year.

Two Advisory Officers, Grade I, in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS)

Mechanical Services Design Engineer

Applications are invited for the post of Mechanical Services Design Engineer in EMBS. Based in the Maintenance and Minor Works Section, the post-holder will work as part of the professional in-house design team that includes Project Managers, Architects, Electrical Engineers, and Quantity Surveyors. Duties include full design and specification, and management of projects covering preparation of tender estimates through to instruction of consultants and contractors, commissioning, and handover to end users.

Applicants should have graduated in a mechanical engineering discipline and have acquired or be working towards affiliation with a relevant professional body. Experience of managing mechanical work and delivering designs on a wide range of building types is also required. Project managing experience would also be beneficial.

Electrical Services Design Engineer

Applications are invited for the post of Electrical Services Design Engineer in EMBS. Based in the Maintenance and Minor Works Section, the post-holder will work as part of the professional in-house design team dedicated to minor works procurement.

Applicants should have a degree in an electrical engineering discipline, have or be working towards membership of a relevant professional body (CIBSE or equivalent), and be experienced in managing electrical design work for a wide variety of building types.

Fixed-term Lectureship in Industrial Automation and Control

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term Lectureship in Industrial Automation and Control, with effect from 1 October 2006, for five years.

The post-holder will lead research in the design and organization of industrial systems and contribute to the undergraduate teaching programme. The focus will be on manufacturing automation and control with a requirement to supervise industrial modules and student projects as well as more conventional teaching.

The successful candidate is likely to have industrial experience in industrial automation and control systems and have familiarity with theoretical and industrial developments in this area. In addition to some exposure to current industrial practices, a background in modelling and management of manufacturing control systems, distributed automation architectures, automated identification, automation systems integration, industrial sensing systems, or supply chain information systems would be an advantage. A strong research record, or demonstrated potential, will be important as will enthusiasm for working with industry and with students.

Fixed-term Industrial Tutorship in Industrial Systems

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term Industrial Tutorship in Industrial Systems, with effect from 1 September 2006, for five years. The post-holder will have a key role in teaching for the course in Industrial Systems, Manufacturing, and Management for the M.Phil. Degree. This course is an established and highly respected postgraduate programme which involves close engagement with a wide range of companies nationally and internationally. The post would also provide a unique opportunity to work closely with industry in a professional or research role.

Candidates should have a good academic background, knowledge of the design, implementation, and operation of modern manufacturing and supply systems, and are likely to have held posts of significant industrial responsibility. They should have a demonstrable enthusiasm for education in the environment of modern manufacturing practice and the potential to pursue research in the field.
