Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Professorship of Molecular Immunology and a Professorship of Stem Cell Biology

The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In their Report on certain fixed-term Professorships and Readerships and future arrangements for awarding the title of Honorary Professor or Reader (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 814), the Board, in accordance with policy and procedure outlined in paragraph 6 of their Notice on appointments to unestablished posts at the level of Professor and Reader (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 552), proposed, inter alia, the establishment of a number of fixed-term Professorships and Readerships, in place of unestablished Research Professorships and Readerships. The Board, in their Notice, also stated their intention to recommend the establishment of Professorships on future occasions for individuals who are successful in a prestigious external competition, for example, Royal Society and Medical Research Council Research Professorships. In a further Report, dated 22 January 2003 (Reporter, 2002-03, p. 519), the Board proposed the establishment of personal Professorships for six holders of Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellowships in the University.

2. With the advice of their Advisory Committee on Senior Appointments, the Board have recently considered the following:

(a) a proposal from the Head of the Department of Pathology for the establishment of a single-tenure Professorship for Professor C. E. Rudd, holder of a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellowship; and
(b) a proposal from the Head of the Department of Biochemistry for the establishment of a single-tenure Professorship for Professor A. G. Smith, holder of a Medical Research Council Research Professorship.

3. On the recommendation of their Advisory Committee the Board now propose the establishment of single-tenure Professorships for the individuals named. The cost of the Professorships will be met from the external funds supporting the appointments and the Council of the School of the Biological Sciences have agreed to support the takeover of the costs of the appointments on the expiry of such funding.

4. The General Board recommend:

I. That a single-tenure Professorship of Molecular Immunology be established for Professor Christopher E. Rudd from 1 January 2006, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Pathology.

II. That a single-tenure Professorship of Stem Cell Biology be established for Professor Austin Gerard Smith from 1 August 2006, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Biochemistry.
