Advisory Officer, Grade I, in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) of the University Offices

Advisory Officer, Grade I (Mechanical Services Design Engineer), in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) of the University Offices. Applications are invited for the post of Mechanical Services Design Engineer in EMBS. Based in the Maintenance and Minor Works Section, the post-holder will work as part of the professional in-house design team that includes Project Managers, Architects, Electrical Engineers, and Quantity Surveyors. Duties include full design and specification, and management of projects covering preparation of tender estimates through to instruction of consultants and contractors, commissioning, and handover to end users.

Applicants should have graduated in a mechanical engineering discipline and have acquired or be working towards affiliation with a relevant professional body. Experience of managing mechanical work and delivering designs on a wide range of building types is also required. Project managing experience would also be beneficial.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Advisory Officer, Grade I, is £27,929 to £33,646 a year.

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Applications are invited for an Assistant Director of Research (ADR) to work in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) on Advanced Materials in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. The successful candidate will also be the Deputy Director of the Centre. The post is funded by Rolls-Royce, and will be for five years in the first instance.

The successful candidate for this position is likely to have a Ph.D. Degree plus postdoctoral research experience, an outstanding track record in research, and will be able to demonstrate leadership qualities. He/she should have a broad range of materials science expertise, particularly in metals and alloys for high temperature applications. The candidate should be able to interact well with senior staff at Rolls-Royce and at other universities, particular those at Birmingham and Swansea since the UTCs at Cambridge, Birmingham, and Swansea form the Rolls-Royce University Technology Partnership on Advanced Materials. The successful candidate will report to the Director of the Rolls-Royce Materials UTC at Cambridge, Professor Colin Humphreys, and to the Head of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. The post-holder will be expected to supervise research students and to apply for research grants. The appointment will be from 3 January 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The scale of stipends for an Assistant Director of Research will be between £25,565 and £36,959 a year.
