Professorship of Medical Oncology: Notice

The Board of Electors to the Professorship of Medical Oncology invite applications for this Professorship from persons whose work falls within the general field of the Professorship, to take up appointment on 1 January 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the University.

Cancer Research UK and the University are developing a major new Cancer Research Centre in Cambridge. The Centre is focused around a new £40m research institute, due to open in 2006, on the same campus as the 1,000-bed Addenbrooke's Hospital (University Teaching Hospital) which contains the Regional NHS Cancer Centre.

The Professorship is funded by Cancer Research UK and has been established to provide clinical academic leadership. It offers an extraordinary opportunity to play a key role in the building of the Cancer Centre. Primary responsibilities will be to lead academic and NHS clinical colleagues to build a world class multidisciplinary clinical cancer centre within the Hospital, and to foster multidisciplinary research across the clinic/laboratory interface.

The importance of the post is reflected in the level of support. Three new senior clinical academic posts are available to be recruited by the Professor, plus a substantial package of recurrent clinical infrastructure support, including Clinical Fellowships, Laboratory space, and funding within the Institute. The successful candidate will be awarded an Honorary NHS Consultant contract by Addenbrooke's Hospital. Informal enquiries are encouraged to Professor Bruce Ponder, FRCP FRS (e-mail bajp@mole.bio.cam.ac.uk).

Further information may be obtained from the Academic Secretary, University Offices, The Old Schools, Cambridge, CB2 1TT (e-mail ibise@admin.cam.ac.uk), to whom a letter of application should be sent, together with details of current and future research plans, a curriculum vitae, a publications list, and a PD18 form with details of two referees, so as to reach him no later than 15 August.

The University is committed to equality of opportunity.
