Computer Officer, Grade I, in the Department of Earth Sciences

A Computer Officer, Grade I, is required to carry full responsibility for the management and administration of the entire computing infrastructure on the Downing site part of the Department, with extensive computing facilities of some 500 personal computers and workstations, and will be assisted by one full-time Computer Officer, Grade II, and one part-time Computer Officer, Grade III.

The post calls for a very high level of technical expertise; creative, forward, and strategic planning; exceptional organizational ability; and an excellent rapport with the whole range of users. Extensive experience of installing and maintaining hardware, software, and active network equipment, and extensive knowledge of administration of UNIX (Solaris and Linux) servers, ethernet infrastructure, firewalls, RAID, etc. is required.

The post-holder will play an important advisory role in both research and teaching, including the development of interactive programmes, and take the lead in implementing major system changes. The post-holder is involved in implementing new technologies (e.g. arising from the UK escience programme). The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade I, is currently £34,227 to £38,303 a year.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the Academic Division of the University Offices

Applications are invited for the post of Administrative Officer, Grade II, within the Education Section: the part of the University's central administration with responsibility for the implementation of the University's educational policies and procedures.

The post-holder will work with the members of the Education Section in supporting the University's procedures for the quality of learning, teaching, and assessment. Duties will include managing key quality assurance mechanisms in learning and teaching activities, and supporting University institutions in specific areas of teaching provision.

Candidates should be graduates or equivalent, with relevant administrative experience, preferably in higher education. Good communication and IT skills, and the ability to work to tight deadlines are essential. The scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is currently £22,508 to £29,127 a year.

Departmental Secretary, Grade C (Personnel Officer), in the Department of Chemistry

Applications are invited for this administrative office, which is available immediately. The Personnel Officer is responsible for advising and assisting the Head of the Department in the administration of a wide range of personnel matters, including the development of Departmental HR policy, dealing with matters of discipline, and having overall responsibility for managing the Department's personnel records system. Additionally, the post-holder will be responsible for developing the Department's transferable skills programme for research students, and for managing the Department's postgraduate admissions procedures.

Applicants should have excellent IT, organizational, and communication skills. Experience in personnel management would be highly advantageous. The person appointed will need to be able to respond flexibly and sensitively to a wide range of situations, involving staff at all levels in a large University science Department. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Departmental Secretary, Grade C, is currently £23,643 to £29,127 a year. Appointment will be subject to a probationary period of nine months.

Research Assistant in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for one full-time Research Assistant to work on an ESRC-funded project on perceptions of worth and social status in early modern England. The applicant will work with Dr Alexandra Shepard to collect material from church court records held in a number of local record offices, to compile a database from it, and to co-author an article on the distribution of wealth and poverty in early modern England. The appointment will be for 18 months from September 2005, though the start date may be flexible.

Candidates should have an active interest and involvement in research and should be working towards or may already possess a higher degree in History or a cognate discipline. They will need familiarity with early modern primary sources and palaeography, and experience of compiling datasets (preferably using a relational database). Experience of working with early modern church court records is desirable but not essential. The post is available on the Research Assistant scale (currently £19,460 to £21,640).

Social Housing Research Associate and Research Assistant (two posts) in the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research (Department of Land Economy)

The Research Associate and Research Assistant will be expected to collaborate with the existing Dataspring team carrying out data analyses and assisting with the production of reports and publications. In addition the Research Associate will be expected to lead on appropriate projects, write substantive research reports, and liaise directly with funders.

Applicants for both posts should be familiar with quantitative research methods and data analysis software, including Access, Excel, and SPSS. Each should possess good communication skills, a good first degree, and be able to work to deadlines. In addition the successful applicant for the post of Research Associate will be expected to have some knowledge of UK social housing research, possess a relevant second degree with a research focus, and have experience of using Mapviewer and ArcGIS.

Appointment for the Research Associate post will be within the salary range of £19,460 to £29,127 a year, and will be for a period of twelve months. Appointment for the Research Assistant post will be within the salary range of £19,460 to £21,640 a year, and will be for a period of six months.

Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Both posts are available for immediate commencement and may be renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
