Examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) 2006: Notice

The Development Studies Committee give notice that in the academical year 2005-06 the subjects for the examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) will be as follows:

Group 1

1Development economics
 This paper will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper.
2Institutions and development
 For candidates taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of
 
either(2a)  a three-hour written paper
or (2b)  two essays of 5,000 words each.
 For candidates not taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper (2a).
3Sociology and politics of development
 This paper will be examined by means of two essays of 5,000 words each.

Group 2: Full subjects

11Topics in industrial and financial economics (Subject 410 from the examination in Economics): to be examined by means of one 4,000-word essay and two 2,000-word essays
13Financial organization and economic growth (Subject 520 from the examination in Economics): to be examined by means of two 4,000-word essays
14Philosophical issues in economics (Subject 650 from the examination in Economics): to be examined by means of four 2,000-word essays
18Social anthropology and development (Paper 3a from the examination in Social Anthropological Analysis): to be examined by means of either a three-hour written paper (18a) or two 5,000-word essays (18b).
22Globalization, big business, and developing countries (Paper MP13 from the examination in Management Studies): to be examined by means of two 5,000-word essays
30Justice and development: to be examined by means of two 5,000-word essays

Group 2: Half subjects

100Economic growth, politics, and health since 1750 (Advanced Paper 3 from the M.Phil. in Social and Economic History): to be examined by means of an open book examination (two 1,500-word essays). To be combined with another half paper from the M.Phil. in Social and Economic History of the student's choice.
161National planning and economic policy I (B05 from the examination in Land Economy Option B): to be examined by means of a two-hour written examination
162National planning and economic policy II (B06 from the examination in Land Economy Option B): to be examined by means of a two-hour written examination
231Issues in public policy and regeneration I (PGR02 from the examination in Land Economy Option B): to be examined by means of a two-hour written examination
232Issues in public policy and regeneration II (PGR06 from the examination in Land Economy Option B): to be examination by means of a two-hour written examination

The Development Studies Committee give notice that options in Group 2 may be added to or removed from the above list by the Division of Michaelmas Term 2005. A further Notice will be issued if any such changes are made.
