PROFESSORSHIP OF MODERN HISTORY

An outstanding academic historian of international standing is sought to fill this important chair, tenable from 1 October 2006. The successful candidate will have research interests in one or more aspect(s) of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British, European, and International History. The Professor will play a leading role in stimulating and developing the study of History after 1800 at all levels in the History Faculty. He or she will take a full and active part in the development and delivery of the History Faculty's strategies for teaching and research, will be able to lead and inspire academic colleagues, and will have a particular responsibility for graduate studies in the modern period.

A Professorial Fellowship at Worcester College is attached to the Professorship.

FIXED-TERM LECTURESHIP IN MORAL PHILOSOPHY

Applications are invited for a fixed-term Lecturership in Moral Philosophy, associated with a College Fellowship at Brasenose College. Both the Lecturership and the Fellowship are for three years, from 1 October 2005, and are not renewable. The successful candidate will be expected to give 24 lectures a year on topics in moral philosophy, to give an average of six hours a week of tutorials and classes during term time (the ability to give tutorials/classes in some additional branch of philosophy would be an advantage but is not essential), and to undertake a limited amount of graduate supervision and other examining and administrative duties as required.

The combined salary will be in the region of £27,275 to £30,950 a year.

HEADSHIP OF THE LIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES DIVISION

Applications are invited for the Headship of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division, following the appointment of Professor Nigel Thrift, FBA, as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).

The University is seeking to appoint an eminent academic from any field relevant to the interests of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division. The Life and Environmental Sciences Division consists of high- quality Departments, some of which are in the Experimental Sciences, and others whose ethos is based more in the Social Sciences and Humanities. All are vigorous in teaching and research, and the diverse disciplines are linked by strong thematic concerns such as ecology, evolution, and culture. This is a full-time senior management position within the University, with responsibility for academic and administrative leadership in a highly diverse academic division with considerable scope for interdisciplinary development. The successful candidate will therefore combine academic standing of the highest order with excellent administrative skills and a flair for leadership.

TWO-YEAR, PART-TIME, FIXED-TERM TEACHING APPOINTMENT IN BRITISH HISTORY (1685-1830)

Applications are invited from holders of a D.Phil./Ph.D. Degree or from graduates in the final stages of completing a doctorate, for a two-year, part-time, fixed-term, non-renewable post in British History of the period 1685 to 1830, tenable from 1 October 2005 to 30 September 2007, to cover research leave.

Duties will include tutorial teaching and pastoral duties for Mansfield College, lectures or classes to undergraduates for the Modern History Faculty, some supervision, and examining duties, possibly also contributing to graduate classes and supervision of Master's Degree students.

The successful candidate will have proven expertise in an aspect of British History during the period 1685-1830, with willingness to teach across a broad range of topics and some experience of teaching undergraduates both in tutorials and in classes.

The combined salary will be from £19,460 to £25,699 pro rata.
