University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £24,820 to £38,303 a year.

University Lectureship in the BP Institute

The BP Institute seeks a University Lecturer with interests in chemical engineering, or associated branches of engineering, biology, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, microbiology, or physics. The Lecturer will pioneer new research projects at the BP Institute in collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering, and will promote collaborative research links with BP and other industrial partners, preferably in a field involving flow processes. Teaching will include undergraduate and Master's taught courses and supervising graduate students at the BP Institute and in the Department.

University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering

Applications from suitably qualified candidates are invited for three University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering, to take up appointment as soon as possible, in the following fields:

Innovation, design, and product introduction

The teaching duties associated with the post are mainly linked to the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos which has a broad and industrially oriented syllabus. Areas of research will be at the discretion of the appointee but could with advantage fall within the remit of the Department's EPSRC Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre which has funding of over £5m.

The successful candidate is likely to have significant industrial experience, have held positions of responsibility in design, and have familiarity with product development and industrial as well as engineering design. A strong research record - or demonstrated potential - will be important as will enthusiasm for working with industry and with students. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor M. J. Turbomachinery

The successful candidate is likely to have experience in one or more of the following fields: turbomachinery aerodynamics, heat transfer, instrumentation, computational fluid dynamics, noise, flow control, or design, as applied in the field of turbomachinery in its broadest sense.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the four-year engineering course, particularly in the fields of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and turbomachinery, leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees. Preference will be given to suitably qualified applicants with a record of excellence in research in the field and/or industrial experience, and an ability and enthusiasm for teaching. Mechanical Engineering Design

Candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research in the area of Mechanical Engineering Design, and will be expected to contribute directly to the research and teaching of the Engineering Design Centre (EDC), which forms part of the Mechanics, Materials, and Design Division. The EDC enjoys an international reputation for high-quality, innovative, and industry-relevant research, and has secure funding as an EPSRC-funded Integrated Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC). It is particularly active in the aerospace; healthcare; architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC); and product design sectors. In addition the post will involve contributing to the teaching of the undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering, leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees.

University Lectureship in the Department of Veterinary Medicine

The Lecturer will assume responsibility for teaching, clinical service work, and research in equine medicine, as part of a team of four senior equine clinicians in the Equine Hospital. The post-holder will be expected to provide clinical instruction and participate in the service work of the Hospital, including the out-of-hours emergency service. In addition, the post-holder will be expected to participate in the training of Interns and Residents and to develop a research programme in an appropriate area of interest.

This full-time appointment is available from 1 September 2005. Applicants should have a veterinary degree registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, as well as appropriate clinical, teaching, and research experience. A Ph.D. Degree in a related area is desirable, as is an RCVS or European Diploma in Equine Medicine, or equivalent.

Advisory Officer, Grade I, in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) of the University Offices

Applications are invited for the post of Advisory Officer, Grade I (Quantity Surveyor) in EMBS to cover the full spectrum of quantity surveying with regard to building design, refurbishment, and space management. Duties include the provision of pre-contract cost control, advice on procurement and contract options, and the supply of post-contract services including valuing work in progress and agreeing final accounts.

Applicants should be suitably professionally qualified with at least five years' working experience, have a detailed knowledge of procurement methods and forms of contract, and be able to exercise considerable independence in the financial control of projects.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Advisory Officer, Grade I, is currently £27,117 to £32,666 a year.

Assistant Under-Librarian in the Medical Library of the University Library

This post requires a lively, outgoing, and imaginative professional to work in and contribute to the development of a library serving one of the UK's leading clinical schools and associated teaching hospitals and research laboratories.

The post-holder will have excellent organizational and communication skills, and will be able to demonstrate experience in user education, reader services, and electronic resources. The post-holder should have a good honours degree and a postgraduate or other appropriate professional qualification, together with relevant experience in a health care library. Temporary Lectureship in the Faculty of Philosophy

Applications are invited for a fixed-term appointment in the Faculty of Philosophy. The appointment will run from 1 October 2005 to 30 September 2007. The salary for this post will be between £24,820 and £29,127. Candidates must be prepared to teach political philosophy at least up to first-year graduate (M.Phil.) level. The successful candidate will be required to give 40 lectures, to supervise graduate students, and to examine at both undergraduate and graduate level.

Academic Fellowship in the Department of Earth Sciences

This appointment will in the broad area of climate change and for the first five years will be in the form of one of the new Research Council Academic Fellowships, and is expected to be followed by a permanent University Lectureship (subject to the successful completion of a probationary period within the first five years).

General Manager in the Cambridge Programme for Industry

Applications are invited for the position of General Manager with the Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI). The post of General Manager within the Directorate exists to support and advise the Director on strategy and policy, and to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the whole of CPI. The General Manager is responsible for the support functions in CPI - Marketing, Operations, Central Services (Finance, HR, QA, Estate), and ICT. The Heads of each of these functions report directly to the General Manager who in turn reports to the Director, with a dotted line to the Deputy Director. The General Manager plays a key role in integrating the various teams and activities within the organization.

The successful candidate will have proven general management experience in a similar type and size of organization. He/she will have proven financial management expertise in budgeting, monitoring, and reporting on financial performance. The ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels, and to work with and between teams to ensure the overall effective functioning of the organization is essential, as is experience in successfully managing business support functions. The post-holder will need to be able to identify potential business opportunities and advise CPI's Development Directors on business aspects of revenue generating projects. Knowledge of CPI's business context of sustainable development/corporate social responsibility would be an advantage.

Computer Administrator in the University Careers Service

The Careers Service is seeking a full-time Computer Administrator to work with three other members of computing staff to develop and support the IT systems of the Careers Service. All clients are running Windows 2000 with Office 2000. Bespoke database systems have been developed using SQL Server 2000, Visual Basic, and ASP. The post-holder will spend a significant amount of their time supporting and advising staff in their use of the IT systems.

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent (any discipline) and must have at least three years' office experience with a minimum of 12 months in a post offering IT support to multiple users. Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Office 2000 is essential. Applicants must also be able to show confidence in running training courses and producing user-focused documentation and in upgrading and repairing PC systems. Experience of developing database and Web systems is desirable. Essential skills include the ability to respond calmly, creatively, and effectively to a wide range of IT problems within tight deadlines and to communicate technical matters to non-technical staff in a clear and concise manner in both speech and in writing.

The salary for this post will be between £23,643 and £29,127 a year.
