Consultative Joint Report of the Council and the General Board on a new pay and grading structure for non-clinical staff: Notice
7 March 2005
The Council have received the remarks made at the Discussion of the above Report on 12 October 2004 (Reporter, p. 84). They have asked the Personnel Committee to consider the remarks together with the other submissions received during the consultation process and to take account of the views expressed when they prepare the Second Joint Report for the Council and the General Board on the proposed new pay and grading structure. The Personnel Committee have also put in place the following to assist in the preparation of the Report:
- further development of the grading structure drawing upon discussions with trades unions, with a group comprising representatives from a wide range of institutions, and expert assistance from a professional statistician
- further consultation with institutions on issues such as the matching process, individual job evaluations and appeals, and processes for dealing with other matters such as market pay
- on-going consultations with the trades unions under arrangements for working in partnership and communication with members of staff via newsletters, the Web, and, in due course, open meetings when the central bodies are clear on the key proposals that will be incorporated in the Second Report
- running pilots of the grading process in institutions (the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and part of Engineering thus far) to test and improve role descriptors and to trial the matching process in order to identify difficulties to scope the resource implications for institutions
Subject to progress on the matters referred to above, the central bodies hope to be in a position to receive for detailed consideration a second Report on pay and grading early in the Easter Term 2005.
