FIXED-TERM NUMATA LECTURESHIP IN BUDDHIST STUDIES

Balliol College, in association with the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies (OCBS), invites applications for a fixed-term stipendiary Lectureship in Buddhist Studies, tenable for a period of two years from 1 October 2005. The position is not renewable.

Applicants should hold, or by the start of the appointment expect to hold, a doctorate in the field of Buddhist Studies, and should be able to provide evidence of their ability to teach and do research in Buddhist Studies at University level. The successful candidate will be expected to have expertise in at least one classical Buddhist language. Experience of academic administration will be an advantage. The Lecturer will be required to give lectures, classes, and tutorials, to organize teaching, to carry out research, to examine, and to assist with the administrative work of the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies.

The stipend payable to the Lecturer is likely to be in the range of £23,000 to £28,000 a year, depending on qualifications and experience.

The Lecturer will have Senior Common Room rights at Balliol, including an entitlement to free meals in term and most of the vacation, and the use of a teaching room, probably at the OCBS.

Applications containing a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching experience, and the names of three referees should be sent to the Master's PA, Balliol College, Oxford, OX1 3BJ, by 15 March. Candidates should ask their referees to write directly to the Master's PA by that date; it would be helpful if at least one referee could comment on the candidate's teaching experience and abilities. It is expected that interviews will be held on 28 April.

Further particulars are available from the Master's PA, Mrs Shirley Enoch (e-mail shirley.enoch@balliol.ox.ac.uk).

Balliol College is an equal opportunities employer.
