Philosophical Society

On 6 December 2004 at 9 a.m. a one-day meeting on 50 years of scanning electron microscopy will be held in Lecture Theatre 0, Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street. Programmes are available in advance from the Executive Secretary, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge, CB2 3PY (tel. 01223 334743, e-mail philosoc@hermes.cam.ac.uk). Lunch tickets are available free to Fellows of the Society and at a cost of £10 to non-members. All who are interested are invited. Please note that it is possible to attend the meeting without having to purchase a lunch ticket.

At a meeting held on 22 November, in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, Professor H. Ahmed, President, was in the Chair.

Professor S. R. Bloom, of Imperial College London, delivered a lecture entitled How not to be fat - a view from the bowels. A vote of thanks was moved by Dr Antonio Vidal-Puig.

Thirty five Research Studentships and Travel Grants amounting to £1,800 have been awarded to Fellows of the Society.
