Notice of a benefaction

The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that she has received with gratitude a benefaction of US$1,845,000 from the Board of Cambridge in America to establish an endowment at the University of Cambridge honouring the life and research of Professor Stephen Hawking, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. The endowment is made possible by an anonymous donor and is to be named the Stephen Hawking Endowment for Cosmological Research. Professor Hawking has expressed his warm appreciation of the donation and has agreed to allow his name to be attached to the endowment. The funds from the endowment will be made available to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

The Council are submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 1, p. 218) for the approval of regulations to govern the proposed endowment.
