University Lectureship in Early Modern European History in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for a University Lecturer in Early Modern European History, c.1450-c.1750, to replace Professor Peter Burke, following his retirement.

In the first year the appointee is likely to carry out most of his/her undergraduate teaching for Part I of the Tripos, in the form of lectures and related supervisions. But there will be an opportunity in due course to offer a Part II paper more closely related to his/her research interest.

The appointee will also play a part in the provision of lectures, classes, and supervisions for M.Phil. courses within his/her fields of expertise, particularly those in Early Modern History and Historical Studies. He/she will be eventually expected to undertake administrative tasks in the Faculty.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £24,820 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £38,303 a year. Appointment will be from 1 October 2005 or as soon as possible thereafter, and will be for three or five years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

Temporary Teaching Fellow (part-time) in the Department of Chemistry

Applications are invited for a Temporary Teaching Fellow to replace the teaching duties of Dr Shankar Balasubramanian during his appointment to a BBSRC Research Development Fellowship.

The person appointed will be expected to undertake teaching duties, including laboratory demonstrating, examining, and the marking of course-work for first-, second-, and third-year undergraduates in organic chemistry. The post would be particularly suitable for either an existing postdoctoral research associate who wishes to take on some teaching duties, or someone wishing to return to a part-time academic post after a career break. The working hours may be negotiated by the successful applicant, but are likely to be around ten hours a week during term time only.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in organic chemistry or other relevant discipline. The position is available until 30 September 2007 in the first instance. The pensionable salary (paid pro rata for the number of hours worked) will be in the range of £24,820 to £35,883, according to experience.

Research Assistant in the Cambridge Centre for Economic and Public Policy, Department of Land Economy

A full-time position exists for a Research Assistant in Economics to work on a variety of applied economic research projects being undertaken in the Centre. These include, for example, fiscal and monetary policy, housing economics, and regional economics and policy. The successful candidate will have ideally a Ph.D. Degree in economics and experience in applied econometrics.

The appointment will be for one year starting on 4 January 2005 or at a mutually agreeable later date. The salary is in the range of £19,460 to £21,640.

Equality and Diversity Projects Officer in the Personnel Division of the University Offices

This is a new post created to take forward the University's race equality policy and action plan, and to develop work in the area of freedom from discrimination on the grounds of religion and belief. The post-holder would be a member of the Equality and Diversity (E&D) team, based in the Personnel Division, with a remit for staff but occasionally required to provide support on related student issues.

The post-holder would be required to build on the existing race equality policy, taking responsibility for policy implementation, policy impact assessments and monitoring, as well as guiding the University on the positive duty to promote race equality. The post-holder would develop working relationships at all levels to encourage good relations between all racial groups. The post-holder would be responsible for raising awareness and good practice in race equality and for those of any religion and belief, or none, and to contribute to the work of the team in all areas of E&D in the University.

The post-holder should have an up-to-date knowledge of the full range of equality legislation and experience in the implementation of policy in a complex organization of a similar standing to the University. The post-holder should be a good communicator, be able to form productive working relationships with people at all different levels, and be able to develop and argue cases for policy and action, and to implement them. The post-holder should also be a good problem solver and practised at tactical thinking. The post-holder would need to understand equalities issues and be committed to developing the University's E&D agenda. Practical skills required include researching and writing reports, producing minutes, and undertaking statistical analysis, as well as motivating and encouraging colleagues to implement the E&D agenda (more details of which can be found at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/personnel/equality).

The appointment is from 1 January 2005, or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary for this post will be from £22,508 to £29,127 a year, for a fixed term for three years.

Applications from black and minority ethnic candidates are particularly welcome as these groups are under-represented at this level in the University (S:38, Race Relations Act).
