Board of Electors to Livings: Notice

4 October 2004

The Council have considered the arrangements by which presentations to Livings in the University's gift are made. Changes in the legal arrangements for presentation to benefices mean that the University is seldom, if ever, called upon to elect to a Living within its gift and the Board has indeed not met for several years. The Council believe it is no longer necessary to have a standing Board of Electors. They have consulted with the Faculty Board of Divinity and, with the Faculty Board's concurrence, now propose that the Board be constituted on an ad hoc basis. This would require an amendment to Regulation 1 of the regulations for the Board of Electors (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 118) so that it reads:

1. The selection for presentation to a vacant benefice shall be made by a Board of Electors which shall be constituted for the occasion and which shall consist of the Vice-Chancellor (or a duly appointed deputy) and eight members of the Senate appointed by the Council (four on the nomination of the Faculty Board of Divinity). The selection made shall require the approval of the Council.

The Council have therefore submitted a Grace (Grace 1, p. 16) to the Regent House for the approval of the proposed change in regulation.
