Regulations for Examinations: notice by the General Board

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Classical Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, pp. 252 and 259)

With effect from 1 October 2004

The regulations for the Classical Tripos have been amended (i) to close the loophole which currently permits a student to go straight from Part IA to Part II so that this will only be possible in exceptional circumstances, where there would be an educational advantage for the student of pursuing only one language after Part IA, and will require the approval of the Faculty Board of Classics; (ii) to suspend Paper X2 until 1 October 2005 as the Faculty Board are unable to guarantee teaching for this paper in 2004-05; and (iii) to prevent a student who changes from Philosophy Part IB to Classics Part II offering Paper B2 if he or she has already offered Paper 4 of Part IB of the Philosophy Tripos, given that there is considerable overlap of content in the papers. The regulations have been amended as follows:

Regulation 4 (New Regulations).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

4. A student who has obtained honours either (i) in Part IA and Part IB of the Classical Tripos or (ii) in any other Honours Examination may be a candidate for honours in Part II in the year next after or next but one after so obtaining honours, provided that at the time of the examination he or she has kept seven terms and that twelve complete terms have not passed after his or her first term of residence. In exceptional circumstances a candidate who has obtained honours in Part IA, but not in Part IB of the Classical Tripos may be a candidate for honours in Part II of the Classical Tripos, subject to approval by the Faculty Board.

Regulations 17 (Old Regulations) and 22 (New Regulations).

By suspending Paper X2 until 1 October 2005.

Regulations 18 and 19 (Old Regulations) and Regulations 23 and 24 (New Regulations).

By adding a third proviso to the regulations as follows:

(3) No candidate who has obtained honours in Part IB of the Philosophy Tripos and who previously offered Paper 4 in that Tripos may offer Paper B2.
