Merck Sharp & Dohme Educational Sponsorship Programme

STUDENTSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS IN NEUROSCIENCE AND RELATED CHEMISTRY

The Managers of the Merck Sharp & Dohme Educational Sponsorship Programme invite applications for a number of awards in neuroscience and related chemistry which are relevant to the pharmaceutical industry, tenable from 1 October 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants will be required to undertake original research into problems which may have a bearing on neuroscience and related chemistry.

The awards are available at postgraduate level leading to a Ph.D. (successful applicants must be accepted for registration at the University of Cambridge before starting their award), or at post-doctoral level where the successful applicant will be expected to hold a Ph.D. degree by the time they take up the award. Recipients of the award shall be designated as either 'MSD Students' or 'MSD Fellows'. All award holders are required to participate in an annual symposium held in conjunction with staff of Merck Sharp & Dohme and travel costs for this will be provided. In addition, funding for consumables and travel is provided for both studentships and fellowships.

Tenure will be three years for studentships (maintenance payable at MRC equivalent rates) and for fellowships tenure will normally be for one to two years. Stipends for fellowships are in the range £17,278 to £25,969 (stipend is age related; £20,066 at age twenty-eight).

Merck Sharp & Dohme is part of Merck & Co., Inc., one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies with over 62,300 employees world-wide and an annual research and development spend of approximately £2 billion. Merck discovers, manufactures and markets a broad range of products to improve human and animal health, and has an unparalleled reputation for innovative research.

Application forms and further information are available from the Secretary of the Managers, Merck Sharp & Dohme Educational Sponsorship Programme, The Clinical School, Box 111, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 2SP (tel. 01223 762977; e-mail: pht21@medschl.cam.ac.uk), to whom applications (eight copies) should be sent so as to arrive no later than 31 January 2004.
