Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

DAIWA SCHOLARSHIPS 2004

Each year, up to eight talented British graduates are awarded with Daiwa Scholarships. The scholarships are tenable in Japan for twenty months, providing UK graduates from any academic or professional background with a lasting knowledge of Japanese life, culture, and spoken and written Japanese. No previous experience of Japan or Japanese language is necessary.

Aims

It is hoped that the Daiwa Scholars will maintain their links with the Foundation through the Daiwa Scholars Alumni Association, and contribute to UK-Japan understanding through their chosen career paths. Since its establishment in 1991, the Daiwa Scholarships programme has funded over 70 Scholars from a wide range of backgrounds and skills, including science, engineering, architecture, law, music, theatre, medicine and art.

PROGRAMME

Japanese language

All Daiwa Scholars undertake intensive language study over five terms at a language school in Tokyo. Classes will begin in late September 2004, soon after the Scholars' arrival in Tokyo. Scholars will study Japanese full-time for one year and then part-time from September 2005 until December 2005 when they will sit for Level 2 of the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Level 2 is the second most advanced stage in the JLPT and is a challenging but achievable objective.

Homestay

During the break between terms in September 2005, all Scholars will undertake a four-week homestay with a Japanese family. The homestay offers Scholars the opportunity to improve their language skills and to experience a different aspect of Japanese life.

Work placement

The work placement will begin on a part-time basis in September 2005 and then continue full-time from January until April 2006. Staff at the Foundation's Tokyo Office will consult with the Daiwa Scholars from January 2005 to start planning the work placement. A high standard of Japanese is essential to benefit from a successful work placement so Scholars assume their placements in the last 8 months of the scholarship when they have achieved the required level of fluency.

THE DAIWA ANGLO-JAPANESE FOUNDATION

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation was set up as an independent charitable trust in 1988.
