Graces submitted to the Regent House on 19 March 2003

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 113), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 28 March 2003.

1. That a M.Chir. Distinction Prize be established in the University to be governed by the following regulations:1

 

 

M.Chir. Distinction Prize

1. The income of the fund provided by an anonymous donor shall be used to provide a prize called the M.Chir. Distinction Prize, which shall be awarded annually for a thesis in the field of surgery, either clinical or in a relevant basic science, submitted in candidature for the M.Chir. Degree.

2. The Prize shall be awarded by the Regius Professor of Physic, after consulting the M.Chir. Committee.

3. Any thesis deemed to have reached Distinction standard shall be eligible for consideration for the Prize. If more than one candidate reaches this standard the Prize may be divided.

4. The value of the Prize shall be the annual income of the Fund.

5. If in any year the Prize is not awarded, the unexpended income shall be added to the capital of the Fund.

 

2. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Report of the General Board, dated 12 February 2003, on the establishment of a Professorship of Gastroenterology (Reporter, p. 617) be approved.

3. That the title of the Cancer Research Campaign Professorship of Clinical Oncology be amended to the Cancer Research UK Professorship of Oncology.2

4. That, on the recommendation of the Library Syndicate, the Librarian be permitted to take to the Savoy Hotel, London for display at an event to be organized by the Faculty of Law on the evening of 15 May 2003: Raymond of Penafort, Glosa super arborem quarti libri decretalium, MS Add. 4019; F. W. Maitland, History of English Law, MS Add. 6987; Thomas Littleton, Tenures, 1482; John Ayton, Constitutiones Anglie, 1504.

5. That, on the recommendation of the General Board the regulations for the Institute of Continuing Education be amended as follows:3

Regulation 2.

By amending the first paragraph of the regulation so as to read:

There shall be the University office of Director of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning, and such number of University offices of Senior Assistant Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Junior Assistant Secretary (in Grades I, II, and III) as may be determined from time to time by the General Board on the recommendation of the Management Board. Appointments and reappointments to the office of Director shall be made by the General Board, on the advice of a committee specially constituted for the particular occasion. Appointments and reappointments to an office of Senior Assistant Secretary or Assistant Secretary shall be made by the Appointments Committee for the Institute. The duties of each office shall be determined by the Management Board.

2 It is proposed to amend the title of this Professorship following the creation of Cancer Research UK from the merger of the Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. The present holder of the title, Professor Bruce Ponder, has also requested that the title be further amended to refer to oncology so that it more closely reflects his research interests.
