The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2003, the form of the examinations for certain papers for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos will be changed as follows:
The paper will be divided into two sections: 'Structures' (Section A) and 'Varieties' (Section B). Candidates will be required to answer three questions, at least one question from each section and one further question from either Section A or B.
Candidates will be required to answer three questions. Part II candidates will be required to answer a compulsory linguistic commentary question, which is optional for Part IB candidates.
Section B will no longer contain questions on the history of linguistic thought.
Section B of this paper will no longer contain questions on discourse analysis, nor will questions on the history of the sub-disciplines covered in this paper be set.
The paper is available to all candidates for Part IB and Part II, except those who have previously offered Portuguese as one of their languages in Part IA or IB or have a Certificate or Diploma from the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages in that language. Candidates will be required to answer three questions including Question 1.
This paper will now be topic-based rather than author-based. Candidates will still be required to answer three questions, each on a different topic. There will be a choice of two or three questions on each topic. The topics are: religion; gender; tragedy; national identity; family; dictatorship.
