Draft Race Equality Policy and Action Plan: Notice

The University now has a new equal opportunities policy statement, approved by Grace 3 of 22 May 2002. This year it took the important step of expanding the policy statement to cover students and to embrace both recent and forthcoming legislation on equality of opportunity. A key feature is the explicit commitment to race equality, which will allow the University to begin to meet the new obligations laid down by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, which came into force on 31 May 2002.

Now the University is devising the next stage of its equality action planning with the drafting of a race equality policy and action plan. This will be sent to a wide range of bodies across the University for consultation and feedback. The consultation framework laid out in the plan proposes that the University should consult with students and staff from all racial groups to find out their needs and opinions. The Personnel Division is therefore inviting staff who through personal or professional experience have an interest in diversity and race equality issues, to join an ad hoc group to give advice and feedback on the draft policy and action plan.

The Group will meet on 12 September 2002. To take part, please contact the Equal Opportunities Officer, Dr Felicity Hunt, via UMS (to the Personnel Division, The Old Schools) or e-mail (equality@admin.cam.ac.uk), including your contact details and details of your position in the University. All staff categories are included in this invitation, but if you are not sure whether you are eligible please contact Dr Hunt for advice. Further information can be found at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/personnel/policy/equal.html.
